This position is a temporary, part-time role that will be around 6 months.

Job Summary
The Citizenship Instructor is a key member in the operation of Neighborhood House (NH)'s, Community Health Division. This position reports to the Citizenship Supervisor. This position has primary responsibilities of preparing and presenting effective lesson plans to the ESL/Civics students, so that they may take and successfully pass the English and US Civics test, as part of the process to become naturalized US Citizens. These classes will encompass all levels of ESL students seeking immigration/naturalization services. Classes will be conducted in-person at Neighborhood House's Greenbridge and Birch Creek location and online.
Responsibilities
Administrative (30%)
  • Prepare Citizenship class and instructional materials.
  • Assist Supervisor with development of civic field experiences
  • Enroll new clients in-person
  • Attend Staff meetings, partner meetings, and trainings as needed.

Classroom Activities (50%)
  • Initiate outreach to eligible lawful permanent residents in the community for citizenship education
  • Maintain files for each client participating in the program including assessment and intake form.
  • Teach multi-level classes weekly following the English competency levels required by the contract.
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring as needed.
  • Follow up with clients and assist them with preparing for the citizenship test, including mock interviews.
  • Maintain volunteer supervision and training of volunteers in partnership with supervisor

Data Entry (20%)
  • Maintain and provide quarterly data to the Program Supervisor.
  • Record and maintain participant progress and outcomes in data base.
  • Work with program staff to evaluate the program's progress and identify needs.
  • Record volunteer hours
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in adult education or related field and two years of experience teaching ESL classes, preferably in a community-based setting; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must have knowledge of United States civics and government.
  • Ability to engage students in a classroom setting.
  • Have respectful, open, unbiased, and accepting attitude toward clients and their families.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a culturally diverse workplace dedicated to equity and inclusion.
  • Neighborhood House is on a journey to become a fully inclusive, multicultural, anti-racist organization. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to advancing racial equity and social justice.
  • Strong professional and ethical judgement, particularly in the human services context.
  • Very organized with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Self-starter, highly organized, dependable, have strong problem-solving skills and are able to manage multiple complex problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work on a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends. This is a hybrid position with the requirement to work onsite at the Birch Creek and Greenbridge location at least twice a week.
  • Must have access to independent, reliable transportation for travel in King County.
  • Willingness to comply with established agency policies and performance standards, which may include productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer services, teamwork, and maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Experience working with refugees and/or immigrants.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to read, write, and speak fluently in English.

Required Credentials
  • Must pass Neighborhood House background check requirements.
  • Position requires Washington State bi-annual criminal background re-check.

Post-Hire on-the-job Training Requirements
  • Current First Aid Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Current CPR Certificate within 30 days of hire.
  • Sexual Harassment Training within 30 days of hire.
  • Child Abuse and Neglect training within 2 weeks of hire.
