What is a flatbed hotshot?

A Flatbed Hotshot job involves transporting time-sensitive or smaller-volume freight using a flatbed trailer attached to a pickup truck. Hotshot drivers typically haul equipment, machinery, or construction materials for urgent deliveries. Unlike traditional trucking, hotshot drivers operate under less rigid schedules but must be ready for quick dispatch. They often work as independent contractors or small business owners. This job requires a commercial driver's license (CDL) in some cases, proper insurance, and knowledge of load securement and weight regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flatbed hotshot?

Excelling as a Flatbed Hotshot requires a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), expertise in load securement, and safe operation of trucks and trailers. Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs), tie-down equipment, and GPS navigation systems is essential, and some jobs may require specific endorsements. Strong time management, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication with dispatchers and customers help professionals stand out. These skills ensure timely, safe delivery of oversized or specialty loads and build a reputation for reliability in a competitive field.

What are some of the typical challenges faced by flatbed hotshot drivers on the job?

Flatbed Hotshot drivers often encounter challenges related to securing various types of cargo quickly and safely, navigating tight delivery schedules, and adapting to changing road or weather conditions. There can be frequent long-distance drives, time-sensitive hauls, and irregular hours, which require flexibility and strong self-motivation. Drivers must also be proactive in maintaining their trucks and trailers, handling paperwork, and communicating with dispatch and clients. Developing efficient routines and staying organized can help manage these challenges and lead to long-term success in this role.

QUALIFYING GROSS REVENUE

Revenue generally qualifies when the load is completed and delivered; all required POD, BOL, rate confirmation, and other paperwork is complete and accepted; and the load is ready for invoicing. Approved and billable accessorial charges may be included. Incomplete, disputed, or non-invoiceable loads may roll into the payroll week in which they become eligible. Claims, shortages, damages, deductions, and chargebacks are handled under the signed driver agreement.

• Paperwork deadline: Monday at 12:00 p.m. Central

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Safely operate assigned truck-and-trailer equipment.

• Complete accepted local, regional, or over-the-road deliveries.

• Communicate professionally with dispatch, brokers, shippers, and receivers.

• Obtain accurate pickup and delivery documentation and submit complete paperwork by the deadline.

• Follow applicable DOT, hours-of-service, cargo-securement, safety, weight, dimension, and customer requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Valid driver's license appropriate for the assigned combination; CDL welcomed and required whenever the assigned equipment or operation legally requires it.

• Acceptable driving record and ability to meet company insurance requirements.

• Current medical certification when required.

• Ability to satisfy applicable background, motor-vehicle-record, and drug-screening requirements.

• Knowledge of cargo securement, axle-weight management, equipment inspections, and safe loading practices.

• Strong communication, time-management, and problem-solving skills.

• Military veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

AVAILABILITY AND EQUIPMENT

Drivers communicate when they are available to accept loads and their expected return after periods of unavailability. Assigned equipment is reserved for drivers who maintain reasonable availability and communication sufficient to keep the equipment economically active. Drivers may request loads on holidays or preferred working days, subject to customer demand, equipment availability, safety requirements, and hours-of-service compliance.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Load availability, weekly revenue, routes, miles, and income are not guaranteed. Compensation, equipment assignment, claims, deductions, availability expectations, and the working relationship are governed by the signed written agreement.
