Job description

Description:

An OTR (Over the Road) Driver (both Tour and Freight) is responsible for the safe handling and physical movement of our equipment and cargo to and from our customers’ dock/location as well as various freight carriers. OTR Drivers / Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) operators drive both interstate and intrastate and are responsible for adhering to all local, state, and federal laws established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The OTR Driver drives tractor and trailer combination units (including truck, van, flatbed, lowboy, or other specialized trailers).


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Legally meet or exceed our customers’ service expectations
  • Operates commercial equipment that requires CDL and non-CDL training and licensing to transport assigned shipments safely and efficiently
  • Meet all federal, local, and state laws regarding the legal movement of our equipment (including insurance, permits, licenses, and other regulations)
  • Ensure timely and proper documentation and communication of pre/post trips, ELD compliance, manifests, bill of ladings, weight tickets, and other associated local paperwork, as applicable
  • Review and report required equipment maintenance.
  • Report:
  • all service failures or delays to their supervisor
  • all traffic violations and/or arrests immediately to their supervisor and the Safety Department
  • all accidents, spills or property damage, regardless of extent of damage or injury immediately to their supervisor and the Safety Department
  • all road hazards observed enroute
  • Performs inspections of vehicles as required by policy, local, state and federal law to ensure vehicles are in safe operating condition and have ample quantities of fuel, oil and water
  • Make delivery or pickup of equipment and cargo/freight enroute, obtaining signed receipts while collecting and signing for freight as instructed
  • Secures load and ensure equipment/cargo is properly secured/restrained
  • Timely communication with internal personnel regarding shipments
  • Maintain exemplary professionalism and tact when dealing with internal and external Customers either on the phone or in person
  • Work with manager and co-workers, other stations, and customers to resolve issues in an efficient and timely manner
  • Continually look to recommend better processes
  • Keep vehicle clean and in proper working condition
  • Appear at all times wearing clean and presentable clothing complete with high visibility safety wear (as assigned) including steel toed shoes/boots, as applicable. OTR drivers must practice good personal hygiene projecting an image of quality and professionalism
  • Assist in training new drivers
  • Observe and practice applicable TSA policies
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Qualifications & Skill Requirements

  • Highschool diploma or equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum 25 years of age
  • 3+ years of Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) driving experience in the equipment assigned to operate
  • Licensed with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in good standing, with no restrictions
  • satisfy all FMCSA/DOT requirements
  • Holds a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), a current and clean Medical Examiners Certificate (ME Cert), and fulfills all Driver requirements
  • Physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle as required by Title 49, CFR, 391.41 and company policy
  • Drivers must follow local, state, and federal laws governed by the FMCSA when transporting goods for intrastate and interstate commerce
  • Mechanical aptitude; Ability to conduct minor repairs on the road
  • Working knowledge of how to load and safely secure various cargo types
  • Ability to read and understand transportation documents/labels
  • Competency in verbal and written English to ensure safety with the public, respond to official inquiries, and understand traffic signs and signals

Physical Requirements

  • Physical and mental ability to sit, stand and remain alert while driving or while otherwise on duty for long periods of time (up to 11 hours following DOT guidelines)
  • Ability to operate a tractor/trailer unit with or without assistance of an artificial prosthesis or other reasonable accommodation, for long periods of time following DOT guidelines
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high
  • Ability to lift, carry and connect various hoses, fittings and other equipment/items weighing up to or in excess of 50 lbs. and up to 25 feet distance
  • Must be able to walk, stand, kneel, bend, squat, crawl, twist, climb, reach, lift, balance and stoop as needed to inspect equipment, make repairs, open, close, replace domes, valves, vents or other equipment necessary for safe and efficient operation of the trailer
  • Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle’s cab 10 or more times per day with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and above the shoulder handholds
  • Must be able to hook and unhook trailers from the tractor including the cranking lever used to raise and lower landing gear
  • Must be able to grasp, fit and properly use hand tools as required
  • Frequent phone and radio communication
