Fixed Operations Manager information

What is a fixed operations manager?

A Fixed Operations Manager oversees the service, parts, and sometimes the body shop departments in an automotive dealership. Their primary responsibilities include managing daily operations, ensuring high customer satisfaction, increasing profitability, and maintaining efficient workflow in these departments. They work closely with service advisors, technicians, and parts staff to coordinate repairs, maintenance, and parts sales. Effective Fixed Operations Managers also focus on staff training, process improvement, and meeting performance targets for the dealership.

How does a fixed operations manager typically collaborate with other departments within a dealership?

A Fixed Operations Manager works closely with the service, parts, and sometimes body shop departments to ensure smooth workflows and consistent customer satisfaction. They often coordinate with the sales department to align service promotions or resolve customer concerns that span multiple areas. Regular meetings and clear communication with department heads are common, facilitating unified goals and addressing operational challenges. This collaborative approach helps maximize efficiency, drive profitability, and support overall dealership success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fixed operations manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fixed Operations Manager, you need a solid background in automotive service operations, inventory management, and customer service, typically supported by experience in dealership environments and sometimes a degree in business or automotive management. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), repair order software, and manufacturer certification programs is highly valuable. Leadership, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help motivate teams and ensure customer satisfaction. These skills are essential for optimizing service department efficiency, driving revenue growth, and maintaining high customer loyalty in a competitive market.

What is the difference between Fixed Operations Manager vs Service Director?

AspectFixed Operations ManagerService Director
CredentialsExperience in automotive service, certifications like ASE or OEM-specific trainingSimilar certifications, often with additional leadership or business management credentials
Work EnvironmentOversees service, parts, and repair departments within a dealershipLeads the entire service department, focusing on operations, customer satisfaction, and profitability
Industry UsageCommonly used in automotive dealerships and repair shopsPrimarily used in larger dealerships or automotive groups with broader responsibilities

The Fixed Operations Manager and Service Director roles share similar credentials and work environments, both focusing on automotive service operations. However, the Service Director typically has a broader scope, overseeing the entire service department's strategic and operational aspects, especially in larger dealerships. The Fixed Operations Manager often handles day-to-day management, making these roles distinct yet closely related in the automotive industry.

Job description

Junior Parts Advisor

Cardinal KIA | Niagara Falls, Ontario

$19.00-$21.00 per hour plus performance bonus

Cardinal KIA is preparing to open our brand-new Niagara Falls dealership, and we are looking for a Junior Parts Advisor to grow with our team.

This is an entry-level position intended for someone who wants to build a long-term career in the automotive industry. Previous dealership or parts experience is an asset, but it is not required. We are prepared to train someone who is dependable, works hard and wants to continue learning and taking on more responsibility.

The goal is to develop the successful candidate into a knowledgeable Parts Advisor with the skills and experience needed to advance within Cardinal KIA or Northern Roads Auto Group.

Training and Career Development

You will receive hands-on training from our Parts Manager and other experienced members of the dealership team. Additional training will be provided through industry partners such as PBS Systems, NCM Associates and other automotive training providers.

As part of your onboarding, you will also be cross-trained in our service department. This will include learning basic service tasks, repair-order flow and how work moves through the shop.

The service cross-training will help you understand:

  • How technicians use and request parts
  • How parts availability affects technician productivity
  • How repair orders move through the service department
  • How parts, service and technicians work together
  • How delays affect customers and the dealership
  • How an efficient fixed operations department operates

This broader training will make you a stronger Parts Advisor and give you exposure to other potential career paths within the dealership.

As your knowledge and performance develop, future opportunities may include Parts Advisor, Senior Parts Advisor, Assistant Parts Manager, Parts Manager, service-department positions or other roles within Northern Roads Auto Group.

Responsibilities

  • Assist technicians and service advisors with parts requests
  • Learn to identify and order the correct parts using manufacturer and dealership systems
  • Deliver parts directly to technicians throughout the shop
  • Stage parts for scheduled appointments and upcoming repairs
  • Complete local parts deliveries and pickups when required
  • Receive, inspect, organize and stock incoming parts
  • Assist retail and wholesale customers in person and over the phone
  • Prepare parts quotes and place orders
  • Monitor special-order parts and communicate updates
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and organized storage locations
  • Assist with inventory counts, returns and warranty parts
  • Complete basic service tasks during cross-training
  • Keep the parts department and work areas clean, safe and organized
  • Assist the Parts Manager with process development and improvement
  • Support other areas of the department when needed

An important part of this position is helping our technicians remain productive. This includes delivering parts directly to technicians, preparing parts in advance and helping reduce the time technicians spend waiting for or looking for parts.

You will also work with the Parts Manager to identify and develop processes that improve shop efficiency, technician productivity, customer turnaround times and overall fixed operations profitability.

What We Are Looking For

  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality
  • A genuine interest in building a career
  • Willingness to learn both parts and service operations
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Good communication and customer-service skills
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new systems
  • Ability to follow direction, accept feedback and apply training
  • Willingness to help throughout the department and shop
  • Ability to safely handle, move and organize automotive parts
  • A valid Ontario driver's licence and acceptable driving record
  • Availability to work scheduled shifts Monday through Saturday, based on departmental needs

Experience in automotive parts, customer service, retail, warehousing, delivery or inventory management is helpful but not required.

What We Offer

  • $19.00-$21.00 per hour
  • Additional performance bonus
  • A position in Cardinal KIA's brand-new facility
  • On-site training and ongoing coaching
  • Training through recognized automotive industry partners
  • Cross-training in both parts and service
  • Opportunities to take on more responsibility as your skills develop
  • Advancement opportunities within Cardinal KIA and Northern Roads Auto Group

Cardinal KIA is entering a significant period of growth. Joining us now provides an opportunity to learn the business, contribute to the development of our new operation and grow alongside the dealership.

If you are looking for a place where your effort and development can lead to greater responsibility and future career opportunities, we would like to hear from you.

Please apply with your resume and a brief explanation of why this opportunity interests you.
