The Fixed Income Trader is responsible for executing fixed income transactions in accordance with established guidelines, ensuring fair, accurate, and timely execution and settlement. The role requires close monitoring of market conditions, disciplined management of order flow, and effective communication of relevant pricing and market developments to portfolio managers and key stakeholders. The trader applies sound judgment within prescribed policies, responds efficiently to changing market dynamics, and operates with a moderate level of guidance and oversight.
Work Location: On Site (5 days)
Major Duties:
  • Executes fixed income trades efficiently while minimizing market impact and transaction costs.
  • Ensures trade orders are executed fairly and equitably, including prompt execution without bias toward originating source.
  • Partners with clients and internal stakeholders on idea generation and strategy implementation.
  • Communicates relevant market information and developments impacting securities prices to portfolio managers and other appropriate parties.
  • Ensures accurate and timely settlement of all trades in accordance with established procedures and controls.
  • Maintains active relationships with street counterparties to support effective fixed income trading and liquidity management.
  • Responds to client, portfolio management, and internal partner inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, and industry best practices governing investments and trading.
  • Adheres to established trading procedures, risk controls, and governance protocols.
  • Continues to enhance knowledge of markets, products, and trading tools to support effective execution and decision-making.

Knowledge:
  • Strong knowledge of investments, including terminology, instruments, general industry practices, market structures, execution techniques, regulatory environment, and relevant securities laws, typically acquired through on-the-job experience and/or completion of a four-year degree, to support effective fixed income trade execution.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess market events, exercise sound judgment, and make timely decisions in dynamic market conditions.

Experience:
  • FINRA Securities Licenses 7, 52, and 63 required; Series 53 is a plus.
  • Prior experience in fixed income trading or a closely related trading role.
  • Preferred: Versatility across multiple fixed income products, supporting broader market insight and cross-product collaboration.
  • Preferred: College or University degree

Salary Range:
116,100 to 156,700 USD
Salary range is a good faith estimate of base pay. Northern Trust provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement benefits (401k and pension), health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, spending accounts and disability), paid time off, parental and caregiver leave, life & accident insurance, and other voluntary and well-being benefits. Northern Trust also provides a discretionary bonus program that may include an equity component.
