Through the use of social and restorative justice principles, Five Keys provides traditionally underserved communities the opportunity to improve their lives through a focus on the Five Keys: EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT, RECOVERY, FAMILY, COMMUNITY.
Five Keys Overview
Five Keys was founded in 2003 by the San Francisco Sheriff's Department as the first accredited charter high school in the nation to provide diploma programs for adults in county jails. Today we are a much different social justice non-profit agency that has expanded its charter schools into 9 counties, in 24 jail locations and over 80 community learning centers. In addition to our schools, now we also run multiple homeless shelters, employment programs, programs for the unsheltered, reentry programs and housing for women suffering from immense injustice.

JOB SUMMARY
The Substitute Teacher position reports to the Principal and is accountable for providing instruction to students in various locations, serving no more than 30 consecutive days in a single General Education classroom, or 20 consecutive days in a Special Education classroom. Substitute Teachers are allowed to work an unlimited amount of instructional days in a school year, but must be assigned to a different class every 30 or 20 days.
The Substitute Teacher will support students in educational areas such as math, reading, writing, computer skills, and other high school coursework or prep work for equivalency exams.
We are looking for someone who insists on maintaining a positive attitude and enjoys supporting a diverse group of people. This job is for you if you are able to demonstrate sensitivity to various family and cultural patterns in planning and monitoring classroom activities. You will support the Five Keys mission by creating a learning and work environment of mutual respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking through an equity lens. In addition, you will contribute to our appreciation of diversity and foster a climate of multicultural understanding.
This position supports multiple in-custody and community sites. Hours vary between 7:00 am - 8:00 pm.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan, prepare, follow, and present lessons effectively
  • Responsible for student academic growth and development in meeting student academic needs by providing appropriate and approved instruction
  • Maintain a climate conducive to student learning
  • Apply classroom management strategies
  • Develop and maintain open channels of communication between students and staff
  • Keep records that meet the needs of the students and teachers; exercise confidentiality
  • Maintain professional and orderly classroom environment
  • Collaborate with internal and Sheriff's Department staff to provide effective learning activities for students
  • Responsible for continuous supervision of students in the classroom throughout the day and report any incidents to Five Keys management staff, and correctional officers as appropriate
  • Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during assigned work-time, and accept responsibility for maintaining behavior standards school-wide
  • Maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a desirable safe learning environment in and out of the classroom
  • Act as a roving substitute to cover classrooms as assigned or directed
  • May be asked to cover one-quarter, half-day, or three-quarter day assignments, as needed
  • May be required to perform period supervision, or cover vacant assignments as needed during the instructional day
  • Assist regular personnel as needed
  • Perform administrative support duties as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Previous teaching experience preferred
  • Hold an approved valid California Teaching Credential, 30-Day Substitute Permit or pass a Live Scan background check to be eligible for employment:
    • California Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit
    • Single Subject Credential
    • Multiple Subject Credential
    • Designated Subjects - CTE Credential to substitute in CTE-designated courses only

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must wear provided PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and adhere to all safety guidelines and requirements, when needed
  • Moderate to extensive degree of physical and emotional stamina
  • Frequent and prolonged standing, walking, and sitting
  • Frequent talking and hearing conversations
  • Occasional reaching with hands and arms and lifting up to 25 lbs

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This position is contingent upon:
  • Satisfactory results of a Live Scan (criminal background investigation)
  • Successfully obtaining jail clearance for positions working in county jails or probation locations
  • Submitting proof of clear TB results. Results dated within 60 days prior to hire date are acceptable

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Must be willing and able to travel to various regional locations or meetings as needed
  • Work environment varies from site to site
  • Some personal safety risk working in-custody and underserved communities
  • Moderate to high noise level
