Job Description This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 5 located in Kotzebue, Alaska.
What you will be doing: This position performs technician level duties for wildlife management activities including caribou, moose and muskoxen studies in Unit 18, 23, 22, 26A. (e.g., assisting with surveys, captures, and data collection). This position works closely with the Region 5 staff of Wildlife Area Biologists, Assistant Area Biologists, and other Research Biologists

This position will work directly with management and research biologists and gain experience assessing wildlife resources and managing arctic and subarctic of wildlife populations in region 5.
The working environment you can expect: The position and primary duties will be based in Kotzebue, with the opportunity to work on a variety of projects within region 5. Travel to other Region 5 offices and remote field camps will be required for up to 2 weeks at a time. Duties will be performed in both the office and field setting.
Duties include, data analysis, report editing/writing, communicating with the public, license sales, presenting at public meetings, participating in aerial surveys, assisting with wildlife captures, assisting with field logistics, purchasing and maintaining equipment, sealing hides and skulls and other duties as assigned. Office based work may require exposure to biological specimens such as raw furs and hides, skulls, horns, antlers, and biological substances such as blood, hair and tissue. Kotzebue is a remote community in northwest Alaska with limited services and no road connectivity.
The cost of living is high due to the shipping and handling of goods and the limited availability of housing. However, if remote living with "some" amenities appeals to you, Kotzebue may be just what you are looking for. To offset the grocery costs, residents of the region have ample opportunities to harvest fish, game and other natural foods within a reasonable distance of town.
This position may require frequent travel within the State. This position may require field work that can involve exposure to large animals, insects and inclement weather. This position involves travel in small aircraft and helicopters and low-level flights for animal surveys and captures.
This position requires the use of firearms. Who we are looking for: Ability to gather, organize, and summarize data to support biologists with reporting needs. Ability to organize and maintain files, track permits and reports, manage office supplies and equipment, assist with program scheduling, meeting coordination, and the accurate presentation of public information resources.
Ability to work carefully and safely with large and small game animals and with drugs and chemicals; to safely operate boats, snowmobiles, ATV's, power tools and other field and research equipment. Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with field based and regional staff to accomplish goals. Experience setting priorities, breaking down complex tasks, and communicating ideas in an organized and understandable way, both verbally and in writing.
Experience handling firearms and proficiency in firearm use. Experience conducting low-level aerial wildlife surveys in fixed-wing aircraft. AND One year of experience as an advanced fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 4. OR Six years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions: An additional six months of work experience involving fish or wildlife, or outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation. Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection. Special Requirements: Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, traveling by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs or chemicals.
Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are often full-time but may be seasonal or temporary. Special Note: "High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
