How much do firmware engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for firmware engineer in Indiana is $159,327.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $136,100.00 and $195,100.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a firmware engineer?

Firmware Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that allows hardware devices to function. This firmware acts as a bridge between the device's hardware and higher-level software, ensuring that hardware components operate correctly and efficiently. Firmware Engineers typically work with embedded systems, writing code in languages like C or C++ for microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronic devices. Their work is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and telecommunications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firmware Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and a relevant engineering degree such as Electrical or Computer Engineering. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help firmware engineers excel, especially when collaborating with hardware and software teams. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure reliable, efficient firmware that seamlessly integrates with hardware products.

What are some common challenges firmware engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Firmware Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware designers, software developers, and QA teams. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication of technical requirements and constraints, as firmware must interface seamlessly with hardware and higher-level software. Misalignment or delays in one area can impact overall delivery, so Firmware Engineers need strong problem-solving and collaboration skills to address integration issues and keep projects on track. Regular cross-team meetings and thorough documentation help mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Firmware Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectFirmware EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of hardware and low-level programmingBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; strong programming skills in C/C++
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing firmware for hardware devices, often working closely with hardware teamsDeveloping software for embedded systems, often in real-time environments
Industry UsageElectronics, consumer devices, IoT, automotiveConsumer electronics, medical devices, industrial automation

Firmware Engineers focus on creating low-level code that directly interacts with hardware components, while Embedded Software Engineers develop software that runs on embedded systems, often with a broader scope. Both roles require similar technical skills and often overlap in industries like consumer electronics and IoT.

How much money does a firmware engineer make?

A firmware engineer's salary varies based on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually. Senior firmware engineers with specialized skills in embedded systems and real-time operating systems can earn higher salaries, especially in high-demand tech sectors.

Job description

Overview

Working across the globe, V2X builds smart solutions designed to integrate physical and digital infrastructure from base to battlefield. We bring 120 years of successful mission support to improve security, streamline logistics, and enhance readiness. Aligned around a shared purpose, our $3.9B company and 16,000 people work alongside our clients, here and abroad, to tackle their most complex challenges with integrity, respect, responsibility, and professionalism.

V2X is seeking an entry level Embedded Firmware Engineer I (T01) to join the Embedded Solutions team within the Software Department. Embedded Solutions is a core, crossdisciplinary engineering function that focuses on designing, integrating, and optimizing secure, highperformance embedded systems. This includes firmware, FPGA, and electronic product development across multiple defense and aerospace portfolios.

In this role, you will contribute to full lifecycle development of embedded electronics and realtime firmware/software under the guidance of senior engineers. You will work at the intersection of microcontrollers and SoCs, digital hardware, and realtime operating environments to support missioncritical applications such as platform system integration, weapon system integration electronics, and sustainment or modernization efforts.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and debug embedded firmware and software in C/C++ (and Python where appropriate) targeting microcontroller and SoC platforms such as ARM Cortex devices for defense and aerospace systems.
  • Implement and integrate peripheral interfaces and simple device drivers for SPI, I²C, UART, GPIO, and similar realtime I/O under supervision.
  • Support hardware bringup and boardlevel verification, working handson in the lab with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related test equipment alongside electrical and systems engineers.
  • Assist with integrating realtime applications on RTOS or baremetal platforms, helping to ensure responsiveness, reliability, and deterministic behavior in constrained environments.
  • Contribute to basic FPGA development tasks such as implementing simple logic blocks in VHDL or Verilog, running simulations, and helping with timing constraint updates and IP integration under guidance from senior FPGA engineers.
  • Execute unit and integration tests following established test procedures; record results, log defects, and participate in troubleshooting and rootcause analysis.
  • Follow best practices and help produce required artifacts such as requirements summaries, architecture or block diagrams, test logs, and release checklists under guidance.
  • Participate in peer code and design reviews and in Agile or phasegate activities (for example, standups, technical reviews, and basic estimation discussions) as part of crossfunctional teams using tools such as Azure DevOps, Git, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Prepare and maintain clear technical documentation, including design notes, integration steps, code comments, and simple user or bringup instructions, in accordance with V2X processes and configuration management expectations.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, quality, security, and disciplined execution, including adherence to export control requirements and relevant standards as directed by senior staff.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM field.
  • 0–2 years of professional experience in embedded systems, firmware or software development, FPGA, or digital hardware (internships, coops, and substantial academic projects are highly valued).
  • Handson experience (academic, project, or internship) in at least one of the following:
    • Embedded firmware or software for microcontrollers or SoCs in C/C++, or
    • FPGA or HDL development of simple logic blocks in VHDL or Verilog, or
    • Digital hardware or CCA design or test (schematic capture, board bringup, lab work).
  • Familiarity with version control (for example, Git) and basic build and test workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and follow structured engineering processes, document work clearly, and respond constructively to technical feedback.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills, attention to detail, and interest in working close to the hardware/software boundary.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate within multidiscipline, matrixed teams.
  • U.S. citizenship required due to federal contract and export control requirements.

Security Clearance & Other Requirements:

  • Ability to access systems with information restricted to U.S. citizens per federal contract requirements is required.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) secret security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:
