Embedded Software Tester information

What is an Embedded Software Tester job?

An Embedded Software Tester is responsible for verifying and validating software designed to run on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices. They create and execute test cases, identify bugs, and ensure compliance with system requirements. Their work often involves using testing tools, debugging hardware, and collaborating with developers to improve software quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Embedded Software Tester position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Tester, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, programming languages such as C/C++, and software testing methodologies, often supported by a degree in computer science, electronics, or a related field. Experience with test automation tools, debuggers, oscilloscopes, and relevant certifications like ISTQB or knowledge of RTOS is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help testers work collaboratively with developers and engineers. These skills and qualities are critical for ensuring reliable, high-quality embedded software in safety- and performance-critical environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Embedded Software Testers on the job?

Embedded Software Testers often encounter challenges such as limited debugging capabilities due to hardware constraints, reproducing and isolating intermittent bugs, and ensuring software reliability on diverse hardware platforms. They must also work with evolving requirements and collaborate closely with hardware, software, and quality assurance teams to validate integrated systems. Adapting to tight development timelines and maintaining thorough documentation are integral parts of the role. Overcoming these challenges develops strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking, which are essential for a successful career in embedded systems testing.

At Endress+Hauser, progress happens by working together. As the global leader in measurement instrumentation, our ~17.000 employees shape the future in the field of process automation. Whether developing and realizing new technology as a team, collaborating to build instrumentation, or strengthening vital relationships with countless global industries, we work to create trusted relationships that help everyone thrive. As a family-owned company, we look beyond short-term moves and work to create a vision that is forward-thinking for our people, our clients, and the world at large.

What is the role about?

We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join our Product development team at our US location near Indianapolis. As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will integrate and test components for Level and Pressure products used in industrial process automation. You will define software test specifications, create automated test scripts, and ensure compliance with safety-critical standards. Additionally, you'll contribute to digitalization efforts by integrating advanced connectivity technologies such as industrial Ethernet, WLAN, Bluetooth, and cloud-based solutions.

Do you wish to apply and enhance your technical skills in developing products for industrial process automation?

Do you like to work with cross-functional and remote teams in Research & Development consisting of firmware, hardware, and sensor engineers?

Are you looking for an opportunity to develop software in a team environment by using latest tools?

Which tasks will you perform?

  • Integrate embedded software for industrial Level and Pressure

  • Define specifications for software components

  • Ensure quality and compliance with safety critical industrial applications

  • Drive digitalization by using industrial Ethernet protocols, WLAN, Bluetooth, and iCloud connectivity

  • Writing and executing test cases for embedded firmware features.

  • Debugging using tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, SWD.

  • Automating tests with C#, Python, or similar languages.

  • Testing communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, BLE, etc.).

  • Performing regression and validation testing on firmware releases.

  • Integrate embedded tests into CI/CD pipelines, including static analysis, and MISRA/functionalsafety checks.

  • Writing and executing test cases for embedded firmware features.

  • Testing on real hardware (development boards, microcontrollers, sensors, actuators).

  • Reviewing embedded code, even if you're not writing large features, suggest C++ solutions.

  • Documenting test results and working closely with developers to identify defects.

What do we expect from you?

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, or low level Software Engineering or Computer Science and preferably 3 or more years' experience in software development, recent graduates with internship experience in embedded software projects or embedded SQA will also be considered.

  • High level experience in C/C++, preferably also in C# and Python.

  • Strong understanding of Memory, Interrupts, GPIO, Timers/PWM, and Bootloaders.

  • Knowledge in source control systems and processes, preferably in Git/Gitlab.
