GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Firefighter is responsible for providing fire protection, rescue operations, and emergency medical services to the public. This position is designated as an essential position.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

The essential functions/typical tasks listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.

  • Responds to fire and medical emergencies by extinguishing structure and vehicle fires, operating firefighting equipment, assessing incident scenes, providing emergency medical care, and assisting with hazardous materials incidents.
  • Maintains readiness and proficiency by participating in required training sessions, drills, and physical fitness programs.
  • Completes station responsibilities, including incident reports, daily activity logs, equipment inspections, minor repairs, and upkeep of facilities and grounds.
  • Supports community safety through public education programs, school presentations, station tours, equipment demonstrations, and providing fire prevention information to citizens.
  • Contributes to departmental effectiveness by assisting in the development and improvement of city and departmental policies, procedures, and operational practices.
  • Effectively communicates and works with the public, team members, and other agencies to ensure safety, cooperation, and positive community relations.
  • Prepares necessary reports on activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:ย 

  • Working knowledge of the operations and maintenance of firefighting equipment used by the fire department.
  • Working knowledge of the geographic and street layout of the town.
  • Working knowledge of modern firefighting methods including flammable liquids and structural firefighting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of radio operations.
  • Ability to prepare written reports.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work for limited periods of time under adverse conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. This position involves work requiring the employee to move and/or lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, grasp, talk, hear, taste, smell and lift. Sufficient visual acuity required in this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions throughout the year, including extreme heat and cold; subject to hazards including working near functioning machinery; subject to fumes, odors, gases, humid conditions, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration; subject to working in tight and enclosed spaces and required to wear self-contained breathing apparatus when necessary. An employee in this class could "reasonably anticipate" to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials as a result of performing their job duties. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting activities when the noise levels may be loud.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:ย 

  • Must possess high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to read and write the English language.
  • Must possess NC Firefighter I & II Certifications.
  • Must possess a Current NC or National Registry EMR or EMT Basic Certification.
  • Must possess Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations Level Certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:ย 

  • Minimum age requirement of 18 years.
  • Ability to successfully complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) coursework 100, 200, 700, and 800 within twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid NC driver's license without a record of suspension or revocation in any State.
  • Must be of good moral character and of temperate.
  • Must be reachable and able to respond outside of normal operating hours.ย 

DRUG TESTING: This position requires the employee to be subject to random drug testing as per the Town of Landis Policy. ย
