Firearms Engineer information

What is a firearms engineer?

A Firearms Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and improving firearms and related components. They apply engineering principles to enhance weapon performance, safety, and manufacturability. Their work may involve prototyping, ballistic testing, material selection, and compliance with regulatory standards. Firearms Engineers often collaborate with manufacturers, military organizations, and law enforcement agencies. Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering, ballistics, and metallurgy is essential for this role.

What are the typical responsibilities of a firearms engineer?

Firearms Engineers typically spend their days designing and developing new firearms or firearm components using CAD software, collaborating with manufacturing teams to ensure prototypes meet specifications, and conducting rigorous testing for performance and safety. They often troubleshoot design issues, document testing results, and ensure compliance with industry and governmental regulations. Regular interaction with other engineers, production staff, and sometimes clients is also common to coordinate project goals and timelines. This role blends innovative design work with hands-on technical problem-solving and regulatory awareness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firearms engineer?

To thrive as a Firearms Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and ballistics, typically obtained through a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in CAD software, manufacturing processes, and knowledge of safety standards and industry certifications (such as ATF compliance) are crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are vital to ensure the safe, legal, and innovative design and testing of firearms.

Job description

At Coram AI, we’re reimagining video security for the modern world. Our cloud-native platform uses computer vision and AI to help businesses stay safe, make smarter decisions, and move faster; from real-time alerts to seamless clip sharing and multi-site visibility.

You’ll be joining an ambitious, fast-moving team that values clarity, craftsmanship, and impact. Every person here has a voice, ships meaningful work, and helps shape how AI can make the world safer and more connected.

The role:

As a Design Engineer at Coram AI, you’ll own the mechanical and electromechanical design of our next-generation security and edge-AI systems. You’ll bridge industrial design, manufacturing, and field deployment: building products that integrate compute, power, and connectivity in rugged, real-world environments. You’ll take ideas from concept through production, shaping how our hardware scales globally.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design, development, and validation of electromechanical assemblies balancing performance, manufacturability, and cost

  • Own the full product lifecycle from prototype through EVT/DVT/PVT, vendor handoff, and field deployment

  • Manage vendor and supplier relationships to ensure on-time, high-quality delivery

  • Be a proactive self-starter: take initiative, act with urgency, and bring a scrappy, hands-on approach to problem solving in fast-moving environments

  • Drive execution across multiple workstreams with urgency and accountability

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field

  • 2–5 years of experience in electromechanical or hardware product development

  • Strong CAD proficiency (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or equivalent)

  • Proven DFM/DFA experience and understanding of manufacturing techniques for sheet metal and injection molding

  • Working knowledge of thermal, vibration, and environmental design considerations

  • Resilient in challenging and fast-paced environments

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to influence at all levels

  • Ability to work in an onsite environment - we move quicker when we're in the same room

Nice-to-haves:
  • Chinese proficiency and experience leading vendor engagement or manufacturing with partners in Taiwan and China

  • Strong hands-on prototyping instincts with the ability to translate ideas into physical proofs of concept and iterate fast

  • Ability to take projects from half-baked idea to working hardware without waiting for direction

  • Curiosity and personal drive to learn new fabrication methods, materials, and processes to expand your range as an engineer

What we offer:
  • Competitive compensation package (base salary + variable compensation)

  • 100% Employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and base life insurance

  • Flexible paid time off and 10 paid holidays

  • 401(k) with both Traditional and Roth options

  • Equity in a rapidly growing company

  • Referral bonuses

  • Daily team dinners and regular team off-sites to build connection and momentum

  • The latest Apple tech and unlimited tools so you can win

We're on a mission to transform a $50B+ legacy industry by bringing the power of cutting-edge multimodal LLMs and computer vision to real-world security and operations. From firearm detection to intelligent access control, our AI-native platform turns every camera and sensor into a smart system that enhances safety, efficiency, and awareness.

Founded by Ashesh Jain (ex-Lyft Level 5, PhD Cornell) and Peter Ondruska (ex-Lyft, PhD Oxford), Coram AI is backed by Ansa Capital, Battery Ventures, Mosaic, 8VC and Up Partners, have raised over $65M, and were named to the CB Insights AI 100 as one of the most promising AI companies in the world.
