What is fire mitigation?

Fire mitigation refers to the steps and strategies taken to reduce the risk of fire damage to property, natural areas, and communities. This often includes activities such as clearing vegetation, creating defensible space around structures, using fire-resistant building materials, and maintaining emergency access routes. Fire mitigation is essential for minimizing the impact of wildfires and protecting lives and property, especially in areas prone to wildfire events.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in fire mitigation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Fire Mitigation, you need knowledge of fire behavior, risk assessment, and vegetation management, often supported by certifications in wildfire or forestry management. Familiarity with GIS mapping tools, chainsaws, and fire suppression equipment is typically required. Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills help professionals coordinate effectively and respond quickly to changing conditions. These abilities are crucial for reducing wildfire risks, protecting property, and ensuring safety in high-stress environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in fire mitigation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in fire mitigation often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, navigating difficult terrain, and coordinating effectively with multiple agencies and stakeholders. Addressing these challenges requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and thorough knowledge of safety protocols. Ongoing training, utilizing advanced technologies for fire detection and management, and participating in collaborative planning meetings help ensure that teams stay prepared and effective in minimizing fire risks and responding to incidents.

Water & Fire Mitigation Supervisor
PuroClean of Pittsburgh is growing, and we're looking for an experienced Water & Fire Mitigation Supervisor to become a key member of our team.
Pay: $65,00-75,000 per year
We are a family-owned restoration company with a high-performance, customer-first culture. We believe in taking care of our customers, supporting our team, and doing the job right.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced restoration professional who wants to take the next step in their career. We're looking for someone who can lead a team, manage jobs, communicate confidently with customers, solve problems in the field, and work alongside the team when needed.
This is a working supervisor position. As our Pittsburgh operation continues to grow, this position will have the opportunity to take on additional leadership responsibilities and grow with the company.
Responsibilities
As our Water & Fire Mitigation Supervisor, you will help lead field operations and ensure projects are completed safely, professionally, efficiently, and with exceptional customer service.
You will:
  • Supervise and work alongside mitigation technicians on residential and commercial projects.
  • Manage water damage, structural drying, fire and smoke damage, mold remediation, demolition, and debris removal projects.
  • Evaluate jobsite conditions and determine appropriate mitigation and drying procedures.
  • Set up, monitor, document, and adjust drying equipment and mitigation systems.
  • Manage multiple active projects and coordinate technicians, equipment, and daily field activities.
  • Communicate professionally and confidently with property owners throughout the restoration process.
  • Explain our process, answer customer questions, build trust, and obtain required work authorizations.
  • Maintain accurate daily job documentation, including photos, notes, moisture readings, equipment records, and job progress.
  • Complete required documentation through our restoration management software for office staff and insurance carrier requirements.
  • Work closely with technicians, office staff, estimators, management, insurance professionals, and other project stakeholders.
  • Ensure projects are progressing according to company procedures and industry standards.
  • Maintain clean, safe, organized, and professional jobsites, vehicles, equipment, and work areas.
  • Help train, coach, and develop mitigation technicians.
  • Lead by example and maintain accountability within the production team.
  • Participate in the company's rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hours emergency losses when assigned.
  • Ensure exceptional customer service and client satisfaction throughout every project.

Our Ideal Team Member
We're looking for someone who takes ownership and can be trusted to manage projects without constant supervision.
Our ideal candidate is:
  • A strong leader who is also willing to work alongside the team.
  • Excellent at customer service.
  • A confident and professional communicator.
  • Organized and capable of managing multiple projects and priorities.
  • A strong problem solver who can make sound decisions in the field.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Positive and solution-oriented.
  • A team player who leads by example.
  • Detail-oriented with documentation.
  • Professional and respectful with customers and coworkers.
  • Comfortable communicating with homeowners, property managers, adjusters, insurance professionals, and commercial clients.
  • Someone with a "Yes, we can help you with that" attitude.
  • Willing to take responsibility and ownership when challenges arise.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced emergency restoration environment.

Requirements
  • Previous experience in the water, fire, or property damage restoration industry.
  • Previous supervisory, lead technician, or leadership experience with restoration teams.
  • Strong knowledge of water damage mitigation and structural drying.
  • Experience with fire/smoke damage and mold remediation.
  • Experience working on residential and commercial losses.
  • Ability to manage technicians, schedules, equipment, and multiple active projects.
  • Strong leadership, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Ability to properly document projects using photos, written notes, moisture readings, equipment logs, and restoration software.
  • Ability to train, coach, and hold technicians accountable.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements associated with restoration and mitigation work.

Certifications
IICRC WRT certification is strongly preferred.
Additional certifications such as ASD, AMRT, FSRT, OCT, or other restoration-related certifications are a plus.
