Job description

The Opportunity
Mission North is a strategic communications agency for influential companies to build, protect, and renew their impact. Market-shaping brands like Brex, Canva, Ginkgo Bioworks, Betterment, LinkedIn, Mozilla, Airwallex, Gemini, Toast and Marqeta have turned to us to navigate change and accelerate impact at every stage. Our award-winning culture of curiosity allows us to attract the best communicators and mobilize them around tackling some of the world's biggest challenges. Our stories about breakthrough innovations and movements-and the iconic teams behind them-have influenced hundreds of billions of dollars in market value.
We are looking for an experienced, entrepreneurial leader to drive the growth and evolution of our Financial Services practice. This is a hands-on senior leadership role responsible for expanding our portfolio of fintech, financial services, insurtech, and proptech clients-and for shaping the strategic direction of the practice as a whole.
You will serve as a trusted advisor to C-suite leaders at some of the most consequential companies in financial services, guiding them through defining moments: IPOs and corporate milestones, category creation, regulatory navigation, crisis, and reputation renewal. You will bring a sharp, published point of view on the issues shaping the fintech landscape, activating that expertise to drive the agency's thought leadership, visibility, and new business pipeline. And you will lead, inspire, and develop a talented team of communications professionals, partnering closely with the SVP who oversees day-to-day portfolio management to set and achieve the practice's goals.
This role requires someone who generates pipeline independently, leads pitches from start to finish without executive support, and builds client relationships that compound over time into retained, high-value engagements.
One Team, All In
As a benefit corporation, we're committed to making a positive difference through our work, culture, and community investments.
  • We give back 2% of profits, 2% of our time, and 2% of partner equity to support causes in our local communities, and have invested more than $2 million through grants, donations, and pro bono services.
  • Through our cross-industry fellowship and sponsorship initiative, Foster the Future, we're creating pathways for the next generation of communications leaders.
  • Diversity, belonging, and equity are woven into our business and culture. We continue to advance our policies and practices to foster a more progressive organization and industry.

Go Deeper:
  • 15+ years of senior communications experience at PR agencies (in-house experience a plus) at fintech or financial services companies, with a demonstrated track record of impact at each level.
  • A proven business developer-you have closed and retained clients independently, you maintain a strong and active network of decision-makers across fintech, financial services, insurtech, proptech, and crypto, and you convert relationships into pipeline without prompting or oversight.
  • A recognized voice in the fintech and financial services space, with a demonstrated habit of publishing, speaking, and contributing to the conversations that shape the industry. You have a point of view, and you put it out into the world.
  • A trusted C-suite counselor. You have deep experience advising CMOs, CCOs, and CEOs through high-stakes moments: regulatory change, market volatility, M&A, leadership transitions, and crises. Clients call you first because they trust your instincts.
  • Experienced with communications milestone moments: launching from stealth, creating a category, navigating a crisis, preparing for an IPO, and managing reputation through periods of change.
  • A skilled facilitator and communicator. You lead strategic workshops and messaging sessions with executive teams and present with clarity and authority in any room. Your executive presence is immediately legible to senior client stakeholders.
  • A strong team leader with experience managing and developing senior-level direct reports, building high-performing teams, and fostering a culture of accountability, growth, and craft.
  • Able to work across multiple client portfolios simultaneously, maintaining quality and strategic oversight without losing the thread on any account.
  • Bonus: experience in public affairs and advocacy, financial communications, and/or investor relations.

Move with Purpose:
Business Development
  • Own the practice's revenue growth-set goals, build pipeline, and close. Drive new business development independently, including identifying prospects, cultivating relationships, and leading pitches from brief through contract, without reliance on executive support to anchor the process.
  • Generate organic growth within the existing portfolio by identifying and timing strategic recommendations that align scope expansions to client needs and business moments.
  • Build and maintain a visible, active pipeline, with regular reporting on BD activity, prospect conversations, and conversion progress.

C-Suite Client Counsel
Serve as a senior strategic advisor to the executives at our most important and complex client accounts-not just as a communications partner, but as a trusted business counselor. At this level, counsel means:
  • Advising CMOs, CCOs, and CEOs through high-stakes situations-regulatory developments, market volatility, competitive disruption, M&A activity, leadership transitions, and reputational risk-with the judgment, speed, and discretion those moments require.
  • Helping clients make strategic decisions about their narrative, positioning, and market presence, not just executing against a brief. Clients should leave conversations with you thinking more clearly about their business, not just their communications.
  • Building relationships deep and trusting enough that executives bring you in before the crisis, before the announcement, and when they're working through decisions that have a communications dimension. You are a standing member of their inner advisory circle.
  • Overseeing the development of integrated communications strategies for clients navigating milestone moments-IPOs, category launches, acquisitions, rebrands-and ensuring the strategic frame is clear before teams begin building.
  • Maintaining strong relationships across the portfolio, ensuring quality of service, identifying opportunities for deepened engagement, and serving as the senior escalation point when issues arise.

Thought Leadership & Industry Presence
One of the most distinctive contributions of this role is building Mission North's brand and voice at the center of the conversations shaping fintech and financial services. This means:
  • Developing and regularly publishing a sharp, original point of view-on emerging regulation, market shifts, the evolution of fintech categories, AI's impact on financial services, and other issues where Mission North should have a seat at the table. This includes LinkedIn, contributed articles, and media commentary.
  • Representing Mission North at industry conferences, panels, and events as a credible, senior voice in the fintech communications space-building the agency's profile and your own as a destination for high-quality counsel.
  • Developing thought leadership platforms and programs for clients: from executive positioning and message architecture to content strategy, spokesperson development, and speaker placement.
  • Identifying the moments in the market when Mission North and its clients should shape the conversation, and activating the team to get there.
  • Conceptualizing tent-pole marketing moments for the practice-sponsored media events, roundtables, podcasts, and LinkedIn activations-that increase Mission North's visibility with key prospects.

Team Leadership
  • Collaborate closely with the practice's SVP and broader account team leadership to set strategy, manage portfolio staffing and forecasting, and achieve shared practice goals.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of communications professionals, creating clear paths for growth and holding a high bar for strategic quality and craft.
  • Serve as a steward of Mission North's values and operating principles across the practice and the broader agency.
  • Work cross-functionally with creative, digital, and other agency teams to ensure seamless, integrated execution across client programs.

Great Minds, Don't Think Alike:
  • We've built an award-winning culture of curiosity and experimentation. Mission North is a Fast Company Most Innovative Company, ranking #3 in its inaugural PR and Brand Strategies category.
  • We foster a culture of lifelong learning and personal growth, supporting employees in their professional development.
  • Recognition for hard work is at the heart of our culture, with opportunities for advancement and rewards.
  • We invest in our people, offering a competitive compensation package, profit sharing, 401K matching program, professional development stipend, and comprehensive benefits.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
We're committed to growing and empowering a more inclusive community within our company, industry, and cities. That's why we hire and cultivate diverse teams of people from all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We believe that true innovation happens when everyone has room at the table and the tools, resources, and opportunity to excel.
Statement of Non-Discrimination: In keeping with our beliefs and goals, no employee or applicant will face discrimination or harassment based on: race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, age, gender, marital/domestic partner status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability status, or veteran status. Above and beyond discrimination and harassment based on "protected categories," we also strive to prevent other subtler forms of inappropriate behavior (i.e., stereotyping) from ever gaining a foothold in our office. Whether blatant or hidden, barriers to success have no place at Mission North. We value a diverse workforce - people who identify as women, non-binary or gender non-conforming, LGBTQIA+, American Indian or Native Alaskan, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latinx, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, differently-abled, caretakers and parents, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply. Thank you to the Level Playing Field Institute for this statement of non-discrimination.
Compensation
Actual compensation within the pay range will be decided based on factors including, but not limited to, skills and prior relevant experience.
Mission North cares about you and your overall well-being, and that's why we offer a comprehensive benefits package, for full-time employees, that includes healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan including an employer match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, wellbeing benefits, paid time off, paid parental leave, and several paid holidays, among others.
Pay Range: Expected Salary range depending on experience: $275,000-$320,000, not including year end profit sharing bonus.
