Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program provides student-centered adult literacy services across Brooklyn communities. We are currently seeking a full-time Literacy Zone Coordinator to support participants in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) High School Equivalency (HSE) program through the Literacy Zone Welcome Center at the Flatbush Library Adult Learning Center and within designated census tract areas.


The Literacy Zone Coordinator will play a key role in ensuring participants are aware of and connected to free resources and services that help remove barriers to achieving their educational goals. This position will work closely with the WIOA HSE team and the Literacy Zone Case Manager to support participant success.


This is a full-time, non-union position. The salary for this position is $50,000.00.


This is a grant-funded position, funded through June 30, 2027, with the possibility of renewal based on program needs and performance. Contracts are renewed annually based on performance. This position requires 14 hours of professional development to be completed each year during the program.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the daily operations of the Literacy Zone Welcome Center and ensuring NYSED grant-funded benchmarks are met in the areas of health, social services, family literacy, legal services, functional literacy, financial literacy, workforce development, school relations, community engagement, and citizenship
  • Collaborating closely with and supporting the Literacy Zone Case Manager
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with community partners to support participants and their families
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate informational workshops and community events for program participants aligned with program goals and participant needs
  • Managing Literacy Zone program data and maintaining accurate records
  • The Literacy Zone Coordinator will be instrumental in creating a supportive, resource-rich environment for adult learners working toward their educational and personal goals.
  • Conduct educational and vocational assessments and develop individualized service plans for approximately 100 participants annually
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support, including counseling on career, academic, and social needs, and connect participants to resources that support pathways out of poverty
  • Support participants in navigating the workforce and pursuing post-secondary education, apprenticeships, or training opportunities
  • Conduct outreach, recruitment, assessments, orientations, and goal-setting activities for prospective and enrolled participants
  • Collaborate with program staff and instructors to identify and address barriers to educational success
  • Refer participants to community partners for additional services, including health, legal, and financial literacy supports
  • Assist participants in accessing supportive services such as computer literacy, transportation, public assistance, and childcare
  • Facilitate workshops and informational sessions, as needed
  • Attend community partner meetings and case management meetings; track participant progress and maintain detailed case notes in the ASISTS database
  • Monitor participant progress and provide consistent follow-up to support goal attainment
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support program goals

Qualifications:

  • Some college required; High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma required
  • Relevant experience in adult education, preferably within HSE programs
  • Strong understanding of the barriers faced by adult learners integrating into the workforce, technology, and academic environments
  • Experience providing counseling and/or facilitating informational sessions
  • Knowledge of available educational, training, and employment resources
  • Familiarity with labor market trends, job requirements, and career pathways across a variety of industries
  • Demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness, professionalism, and sound judgment
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a high level of tact and discretion
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Drive, and social media platforms
  • Ability to travel between multiple program sites and maintain a flexible schedule, including evenings and Saturdays

Schedule:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Tuesday, Thursday: 12:45 PM - 8:00 PM
  • Two Saturdays per month: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM (additional Saturdays as needed based on program demands)

Note: Candidates must be willing to travel and work across various library branches within the Literacy Zone target area.
