Job Summary

Under general direction, provides Engineering and Project Management by working closely with Engineering, Strategic Sourcing, Accounting, Construction and Operations staff, outside consultants, and suppliers.  The person in this role will be required to interact with internal as well as external stakeholders.  The person in this role develops and maintains status reports for schedules, cost estimates/budgets/actuals, material delivery, and other aspects of mechanical, electrical, and environmental projects as necessary within the Power Generation area of CenterPoint. Responsible for keeping all applicable parties aware of any concerns or significant changes that may affect assigned projects. This person is also required to assist in after-hours or weekend emergency/planned support for Power Generation.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and maintain status reports for schedules, cost estimates/budgets/actuals, material delivery, and other aspects of electrical projects.
  • Responsible for providing the status reports to allow the team to meet project schedules and budgets or make appropriate and timely adjustments.
  • Schedule and facilitate bid meetings with engineering, construction contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Review and ensure accuracy of invoicing for labor and materials for assigned projects.
  • work with design engineers to coordinate all aspects of schedules and cost estimates.
  • Track material purchase orders, storeroom orders and material delivery dates for input into the schedules for assigned projects.
  • Update monthly cost estimates for actual costs of purchased materials and contracted labor. Provide status reports and updates on assigned projects.
  • Monitor and coordinate project resources at the individual project level. Provide updates to project schedules periodically for management review.
  • As necessary to meet schedule, allocate/reallocate resources, co-ordinate planned outage requirements for projects with operations to help facilitate scheduling and installation of the projects and minimize outage scope.
  • Monitor status of permitting (air emissions, DNR, COE, storm water, wetlands, controlled water ways, Public access, etc.), easements and property rights/land acquisitions, follow-up with agencies to ensure timeliness and update individual project schedules as needed.
  • Assist with adherence to permit requirements. Complete field visits regularly and provide support to field resources (access, co-ordinating with O&M activities, etc.).
  • Review drawings as projects are completed before being sent back to engineering. Create, open, and enter completion notices on projects in PowerPlant to allow approvals for engineering and plant accounting departments, work in Oracle/SAP to report on Project Cost Controls.
  • Assist in O&M efforts to help reduce plant outage occurrence and duration
  • Demonstrate high level of proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point, Project, etc.).
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities.
  • Excellent cost estimating and scheduling capabilities.
  • Possess the necessary level of knowledge and skills in Enterprise Asset Management systems used to organize asset data and manage construction/operations/maintenance activities performed on assets, and fixed asset/plant accounting systems (such as PowerPlant) used to track units of property and associated costs.
  • Must also have experience in Process Development/Improvement, and understand, analyze, and drive improvements to work processes.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Research, quantify, organize, analyze, and report on asset and business data. Be proficient in financial management applications (such as Oracle) used for procurement activities and project cost analysis.
  • Application of knowledge, skills and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently while meeting time and budget requirements.
  • Perform MISO Generator Verificiation Testing Capability (GVTC) data for Power Supply
  • Analytical support for the Wholesale Power Marketing group.  Support to include activities related to generationoffers and generation projections
  • Analytical support for Renewable Generation Group.  Support to include development of GADs data reporting processes and Solar KPI's
  • Analytical support for the Generation Operations and Generation Planning groups.  Activities include supporting the continuation of data gathering and reporting to internal and external stakeholders including Monthly/Yearly reporting to NERC, FERC, EIA, Environmental, MISO, GADS, and other State and Federal agencies
  • Perform Analytical support for Power Supply SCR Catalyst Management.  Support to include tracking catalyst life and managing future layer purchase and replacement projects
  • Perform equipment specific capital, maintenance, and environmental projects at both Power Generating and Renewable Facilities. 
  • Liaison between Tech Services Department and Prod/Maintenance Departments.  Attend daily Production/Maintenance planning meetings
  • Monitor thermal boiler/aux performance.  Analyze unit performance for out of the ordinary performance, anomalies, and trends.
  • Perform projects, manage contractor work both union and non-union and interaction in a Union-shop environment.

Education

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university; preferred fields include Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline.

Experience

Two (2) years of Engineering and or project management experience required. Utility industry experience preferred.

  • Able to demonstrate the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer effectively.
  • Able to communicate orally in a clear manner.
  • Able to hear oral communication either in person or on equipment such as telephone or mobile phone.
  • Able to view a personal computer monitor or laptop screen for extended periods of time.
  • Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop, for extended periods of time creating, composing and reviewing documents and spreadsheets.
  • Able to operate office equipment, including telephone, mobile phone, photocopier, fax machine, scanner and calculator.
  • Able to reach, grasp and move items.
  • Able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle, including ability to enter and exit the vehicle unassisted, and travel long distances.
  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • Must be able to pass a respirator fit testing
  • Must be able to pass a hearing test

Working Conditions

  • Able to support the Emergency Operating Plan
  • Able to work indoors, in an office environment, regardless of whether open office, cubicle or private office
  • Able to work a varied schedule to complete projects and meet deadlines in response to changing demands.
  • Able to work overtime (scheduled and/or unscheduled, nights and/or weekends) as needed or required to meet established deadlines.
  • Able to travel to attend or conduct training, attend regulatory hearings, industry or professional association conferences and/or other meetings (with customers, communities, etc.) and stay overnight or possibly stay for an extended period of time as required.
  • Able to work in fast paced environment with high daily pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to perform inspection and work in a Confined Space
  • Must be able to perform work while wearing a respirator and all other required PPE
