What does a film development executive do?

A Film Development Executive is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and developing new film projects for production companies or studios. They read scripts, assess story ideas, and work closely with writers, directors, and producers to shape projects from concept to a production-ready script. Their role involves overseeing the creative process, providing feedback, and ensuring a project aligns with the company's vision and market trends. Film Development Executives are key decision-makers who help determine which films get made.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a film development executive?

To thrive as a Film Development Executive, you need strong storytelling ability, script analysis expertise, and a background in film, media, or related fields, often supported by a bachelor's degree. Familiarity with industry-standard script coverage software, project management tools, and rights acquisition processes is crucial. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and creative vision are standout soft skills that help build relationships and guide projects from concept to production. These skills are vital for identifying promising content, shaping successful projects, and fostering collaborations in a competitive entertainment industry.

What are some common challenges faced by film development executives when evaluating new scripts and projects?

Film Development Executives often face the challenge of balancing creative vision with market viability. They must assess whether a script’s story and characters will resonate with audiences while also considering budget constraints and the potential for commercial success. #WeAreParamount on a mission to unleash the power of content... you in?
We've got the brands, we've got the stars, we've got the power to achieve our mission to entertain the planet - now all we're missing is... YOU! Becoming a part of Paramount means joining a team of passionate people who not only recognize the power of content but also enjoy a touch of fun and uniqueness. Together, we co-create moments that matter - both for our audiences and our employees - and aim to leave a positive mark on culture.

Come join the Strategy and Insights team at Paramount Pictures and be part of a dynamic group who work across the entire lifecycle of the theatrical movie experience! Unlike traditional marketing, our insights team is involved from concept to release, ensuring the consumer's voice is at the heart of every decision from brand development to fan engagement, to the actual movie in its final editorial stage, to identifying messaging for creative marketing materials that truly resonate. The Insights team drives impactful, data-driven decisions through audience surveys, focus groups, ethnographies, and screenings. Our global insights inform production and tailor marketing campaigns that excite moviegoers worldwide.

This role sits at the center of the department, supporting its senior leadership and working closely with the wider team. It also offers a spectacular view of the movie lifecycle from pre-greenlight to release, and of how research shapes both the film itself and the campaign that sells it.

This is an on-site role based on the Paramount Pictures Studio Lot requiring (5) days in office.

This role divides time between administrative responsibilities and hands-on primary research work, and is a great opportunity for someone stepping into the insights space for the first time. A love of movies and genuine curiosity about how audiences respond to them will serve you well here: this role has a front-row seat to the research and strategy work behind every Paramount release, and a real opportunity to contribute to it.

The Executive Assistant, Strategy and Insights will provide administrative support to the EVP and SVP of Global Strategy and Insights, as well as the wider department, while gaining exposure to entry-level research work.

Responsibilities Include:
Maintain the overall department calendar and that of the Executive Vice President and Senior Vice President, scheduling key meetings across the studio.
Compile and maintain files with relevant materials for meetings, reading the calendar ahead to anticipate what will be needed
Arrange travel plans and submit expenses for the EVP and SVP, and compile documents for travel-related meetings
Answer and screen phone calls and email, taking action when appropriate and following up as needed
Maintain high levels of discretion when dealing with confidential research documents, reports, meetings, and expenses
Contribute to entry-level research work, including:
Reading scripts and contributing to early pre-greenlight analysis
Analyzing long-lead tracking reads and distributing results within the studio
Analyzing and distributing box office projections
Contributing to the development of deliverables and presentations for departments across the studio
Landscape research to understand trends within the broader moviegoing industry
Be a vocal and active contributor to brainstorming sessions and meetings
Be excited by movies and in tune with current releases

Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
Proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Strong multi-tasker with a proven ability to juggle multiple projects at once
Sound judgment and discretion with confidential information
Familiarity with a variety of industry concepts, practices, and procedures
Strong knowledge of movies and passion for entertainment
