What is it like working as a FIFO welder, and what should I expect regarding roster and living conditions?

As a FIFO Welder, you’ll typically work on a rotational roster, such as two weeks on and one week off, involving travel to and from remote job sites like mines or construction projects. Living conditions often include shared accommodations, catered meals, and organized transportation, with facilities varying based on employer and site location. The work environment tends to be fast-paced and physically demanding, requiring flexibility and the ability to work extended hours. While challenging, many welders appreciate the clear structure and compensation, as well as the camaraderie built with fellow team members onsite.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FIFO welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) Welder, you need proficiency in various welding techniques (such as MIG, TIG, and arc welding), blueprint reading, and relevant trade qualifications or certifications. Competency with specialized welding tools, safety equipment, and often certifications like AS/NZS ISO 9606 or equivalent are typically required. Strong teamwork, communication, adaptability, and resilience to remote environments are important soft skills. These competencies ensure reliable work quality, safe operations, and effectiveness in demanding and remote FIFO project settings.

How much do FIFO welders make?

FIFO welders typically earn between $30 and $50 per hour, with annual salaries ranging from approximately $60,000 to $100,000 depending on experience, location, and project complexity. They often work in remote or industrial environments requiring certifications such as AWS or ASME and may receive additional allowances for travel and accommodation.

What is a FIFO welder?

A FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) Welding job involves traveling to remote locations, such as mine sites or oil and gas operations, to perform welding tasks on a rotational schedule. Workers typically fly to the job site for a set period (e.g., two weeks on, one week off) and stay in company-provided accommodations. These jobs often involve welding structural components, pipelines, or equipment repairs. FIFO welding positions offer competitive pay but require adapting to demanding work environments and being away from home for extended periods.
