How much do fifo welder jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for fifo welder in the United States is $20.15, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $25.00 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a FIFO welder?

A FIFO welder is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in welding using the FIFO (Fit, Finish, and Operate) method, often working in industrial or construction settings. They typically need certifications such as AWS welding certifications and work in environments requiring safety protocols and precision welding skills.

Can you make $300,000 as a welder?

Fifo welders or welders in specialized industries such as oil and gas, construction, or underwater welding can potentially earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, certifications, and working in remote or hazardous environments. However, typical annual wages for most welders range from $40,000 to $70,000, and reaching $300,000 usually requires advanced skills, overtime, or working in high-paying sectors.

What are some unique challenges FIFO Welders face, and how can they prepare for them?

FIFO Welders often work in remote locations on a roster-based schedule, which can present challenges such as extended periods away from home, adapting to camp living, and long shifts in demanding environments. To prepare, it’s helpful to develop strong time management and self-care skills, build resilience for working in isolated settings, and understand the importance of teamwork with diverse crews. Many employers support welders with comprehensive safety training and mental health resources, so taking advantage of these can make the experience more rewarding and sustainable.

What welding jobs pay $50 an hour?

Fifo welders and other skilled welders working in specialized industries such as oil and gas, construction, or manufacturing can earn around $50 an hour or more, especially with certifications like AWS or ASME and experience in demanding environments. High-paying welding jobs often require advanced skills, certifications, and the ability to work in remote or hazardous locations.

What are FIFO welders?

FIFO welders are skilled tradespeople who travel to remote locations to perform welding work on a fly-in fly-out (FIFO) roster. They typically work in industries such as mining, construction, and oil and gas, where projects are based in areas far from urban centers. These welders usually work long shifts for several weeks, followed by a period of leave at home. The role requires flexibility, adaptability to challenging environments, and expertise in various welding techniques. FIFO positions often offer higher pay to compensate for the demanding schedule and remote living conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FIFO Welder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FIFO Welder, you need strong welding skills, technical competency in reading blueprints, and relevant trade certifications such as a Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade). Familiarity with welding equipment, safety systems, and industry standards like AS/NZS 1554 is typically required. Excellent communication, adaptability, and teamwork are critical soft skills, especially in remote and dynamic work environments. These skills ensure high-quality workmanship, adherence to safety protocols, and effective collaboration on FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) projects.

Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

How much do FIFO welders make?

FIFO welders typically earn between $25 and $45 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of the projects. Many FIFO welding jobs offer additional benefits such as per diems, overtime pay, and accommodation allowances due to the remote work environment.
