What is it like working a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) schedule in construction?

Working in a FIFO Construction role means you’ll likely spend several weeks at a remote site followed by designated days off, following a set roster such as 2 weeks on/1 week off. The work environment is generally fast-paced and team-oriented, with employees living in communal accommodations and sharing amenities during rotations. Adapting to long hours, variable weather, and being away from home are common challenges, but many find the camaraderie and unique experiences rewarding. FIFO roles often provide excellent earning potential, and successful construction workers may progress to supervisory or project management positions with experience. Staying proactive about your well-being and communication helps make the FIFO lifestyle both productive and sustainable.

To thrive in a FIFO Construction role, you need strong technical construction skills, relevant trade qualifications, and proven experience in remote or large-scale project environments. Familiarity with construction management software, safety certifications such as White Card, and operating various machinery or tools are typically required. Excellent adaptability, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities help professionals succeed in challenging and ever-changing conditions. These skills and attributes are vital for maintaining productivity, meeting safety standards, and fostering collaboration during extended periods away on site.

What is a FIFO Construction job?

A FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) construction job involves traveling to a remote worksite for a set period before returning home for scheduled time off. These jobs are common in mining, oil and gas, and large infrastructure projects. Workers are provided with transportation, accommodation, and meals while on-site. Shifts can be long and demanding, but the pay is often competitive, and time off allows for extended breaks.

Job description

Salary: $18-$19/hour

Job Opportunity: Construction Division Estimator

We are seeking a Construction Division Estimator to be our primary voice for scope development, pricing accuracy, and delivering an outstanding customer experience. This role focuses on combining technical rigor with exceptional communication to ensure every client feels informed and satisfied.

Key Responsibilities

1. Core Estimating Production

  • Estimate Development: Build comprehensive estimates within Xactimate, ensuring full scope of work, line-item accuracy, and seamless incorporation of field data.
  • Prioritization: Follow a "First In, First Out" (FIFO) workflow queue to maintain organizational consistency, adjusting only when directed by leadership for urgent projects.
  • System Transfer: Efficiently transfer completed Xactimate estimates into a project management system, aligning structures with project workflow needs and linking all supporting documentation.

2. Field Data & Evidence Collection

  • Site Walkthroughs: Conduct hands-on site visits to collect precise measurements, photos, and detailed notes.
  • Documentation: Gather and organize all supporting evidence, including jobsite photos, damage documentation for insurance losses, and field verification details. You will ensure all estimates are built strictly on verified information, never assumptions.

3. Communication & Lifecycle Ownership

  • Direct Coordination: Act as the central point of contact throughout the estimating lifecycle, managing communications with a focus on building positive relationships with customers, insurance adjusters, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Customer Delivery: Enthusiastically present completed estimates, answer clarification questions with patience and clarity, and proactively guide the customer through the process to final signature and approval, prioritizing customer satisfaction at every touchpoint.
  • Pre-Production Handoff: Participate in weekly alignment meetings with the Division Manager and Project Manager to guarantee total scope clarity before transitioning jobs over to the production team.

Performance Metrics & KPIs

Your success in this role will be measured by:

  • Accuracy & Defensibility: Producing complete, supported estimates that seamlessly align with adjuster and vendor requirements.
  • Workflow Consistency: Strict adherence to the FIFO queue while maintaining steady, predictable output.
  • Pipeline Management: Maintaining absolute clarity on your queue status, including upcoming field work versus office work requirements.
  • Customer Satisfaction & Approval: Successfully guiding clients through the estimate review process to final signature, measured by the smooth transition of projects and positive customer feedback.

Position Requirements

  • Proven experience creating detailed, line-item accurate construction estimates using Xactimate software.
  • Proficiency utilizing project management softwares.
  • Experience conducting on-site field documentation, including damage documentation for insurance losses.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a genuine enthusiasm for communicating with clients and external partners (adjusters, subcontractors, vendors), with a focus on delivering excellent customer service.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a commitment to a structured, data-driven workflow.
