Job description

Civil Superintendent (Mining Construction - Civil / Earthworks)

Location: Canada & United States (FIFO / Rotational Travel Required)

Schedule: Full-Time | 2 Weeks On / 2 Weeks Off Rotation

Lead Major Mining & Industrial Projects Across Canada & the U.S.

MineSpec Resources is seeking an experienced Civil Superintendent (Mining Construction - Civil / Earthworks) to lead complex industrial and mining infrastructure projects across Canada and the United States.

This is a field-focused leadership role for construction professionals who thrive in fast-paced industrial environments and have experience managing multidisciplinary scopes in active construction settings.

You will work alongside experienced construction professionals delivering technically challenging mining and industrial projects while benefiting from a rotational schedule designed to support both strong compensation and long-term sustainability.

Why Join MineSpec?

At MineSpec, we focus on practical construction execution and field-driven leadership. We build experienced, highly capable project teams that solve problems, collaborate effectively, and deliver quality work safely and efficiently.

What We Offer
  • $136,000 - $178,000 USD annual compensation, depending on experience and assignment
  • 2 weeks on / 2 weeks off rotational schedule
  • Opportunity to spend significant time at home between project rotations
  • All project-related travel, accommodations, meals, and transportation covered
  • Long-term career growth opportunities
  • Exposure to large-scale mining and industrial infrastructure projects

Sustainable High Performance

MineSpec is focused on building a long-term, high-performance culture. We believe exceptional project leadership should not require sacrificing your entire personal life. This role delivers heavy production and field leadership directly on the ground, offering a high-energy environment working alongside top-tier construction professionals. Our work arrangements are designed to support both strong annual compensation and long-term sustainability for our people and their families.

Typical work arrangements for this role include:

Field-facing site presence during active execution phases to align crews and keep project timelines moving seamlessly.

Travel to remote project sites across Canada, with occasional assignments in the United States depending on project needs.

Adaptable rotation schedules (including local site-based, rotational/FIFO, or hybrid) tailored to the specific assignment.

Position Overview

The Civil Superintendent is responsible for day-to-day field leadership and execution of mining civil scopes, including supervising foremen, coordinating crews and subcontractors, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.

Unlike a traditional hands-off construction management role, this is a hands-on, field-based leadership role requiring a strong production focus, practical problem-solving, and the ability to coordinate multiple work fronts in demanding mining environments. The Civil Superintendent works closely with the Project Manager/Construction Manager, project controls, and client/contractor stakeholders to execute the plan, manage constraints, and maintain schedule and quality targets.

Typical Scopes Supported

The successful candidate will lead and direct field teams across multiple civil and earthworks areas:

  • Tailings Infrastructure: Starter dams, raises, embankments, liner interface coordination, and associated water management works.
  • Haul Roads & Access Roads: Clearing/grubbing, earthworks, drainage, aggregate placement, surfacing, and winter roads (where applicable).
  • Water Management: Diversions, ditches, culverts, sediment ponds, dewatering coordination, and pumping systems (civil interface).
  • Bulk Earthworks: Mass excavation, open-pit development, fill placement, compaction control, pads, laydown areas, and plant/site grading.
  • Rock Excavation & Drill-and-Blast Interface: Field coordination with blasting crews and excavation sequencing (as applicable).
  • Civil Infrastructure: Foundations prep, concrete interface coordination, and minor structures/temporary works as required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead daily field execution for mining civil and earthworks scopes, ensuring safe production and quality outcomes.
  • Supervise and coordinate foremen, crews, equipment, and subcontractors across multiple work fronts.
  • Set up work areas and provide direction to foremen on efficient excavation, hauling, placement, and dumping strategies; monitor cycle times/productivity and drive performance to meet production targets.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE, environmental, and regulatory requirements; coach and enforce a zero-harm culture.
  • Provide coaching and on-the-job training to equipment operators regarding safe operation, best practices, efficiency, and quality requirements.
  • Participate in incident/near-miss investigations, including immediate response, fact gathering, corrective actions, and follow-up implementation.
  • Manage daily equipment and manpower loading, including crew assignments, equipment utilization, standby reduction, and coordination with maintenance to minimize downtime.
  • Interpret IFC/design drawings and specifications; coordinate with engineering/survey to resolve constructability issues and field changes as they arise.
  • Ensure required quality control measures are implemented and followed (inspection/testing, compaction and material compliance, hold points, and records) in accordance with the Engineer's specifications and project quality requirements.
  • Coordinate work sequencing and interfaces with survey, QA/QC, engineering, blasting/rock excavation (as applicable), and other disciplines.
  • Coordinate field readiness: permits, access, laydown, materials, fuel, maintenance, and logistics (site-specific).
  • Participate in daily/weekly coordination meetings; provide clear updates on progress, issues, and upcoming needs.
  • Support commissioning/turnover readiness where applicable, including completion tracking, punchlists, and as-builts support.
  • Build strong working relationships with client representatives, contractors, subcontractors, and MineSpec teams.
What We're Looking For

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate extensive experience working on the General Contractor side of heavy civil earthworks or mining construction projects. MineSpec was built around experienced construction professionals from Tier 1 General Contractors, and we place significant value on candidates who bring practical field execution expertise.

  • Experience: Typically 8+ years of heavy civil construction experience with significant time spent in field supervision roles (mining preferred).
  • Sector Exposure: Proven experience supervising bulk earthworks / mine civil scopes in active operations or major capital projects.
  • Execution Fundamentals: Strong understanding of earthworks execution fundamentals: grade control, compaction, materials handling, drainage, and production planning.
  • Technical Compliance: Strong capabilities in understanding and implementing engineering specifications, QA/QC processes, and detailed design drawings.
  • Leadership Capability: Ability to lead crews in remote/rotational environments with high accountability and limited support resources.
  • Interface Coordination: Experience coordinating survey, QA/QC, equipment maintenance, and logistics interfaces is an asset.
  • Blasting Integration: Familiarity with drill-and-blast and rock excavation sequencing is an asset (where applicable).
  • Safety & Compliance: Demonstrated safety leadership and a practical understanding of environmental compliance on civil construction sites.
  • Travel & Eligibility: Eligibility to work in Canada is required; eligibility and willingness to travel for work in the USA is an asset (project-dependent).
Education & Experience

The following educational and experience backgrounds will be considered:

  • Field-Acquired Leadership: Trade-based leadership backgrounds or progressive field-acquired superintendency experience gained through successful project delivery. Field leadership experience remains primary.
  • Technical / Tech: Post-secondary education in construction, civil technology, or a related technical discipline is an asset.

MineSpec recognizes that exceptional project leaders come from a variety of career paths. We value practical field experience, crew safety, and production capability above purely theoretical knowledge.

Work Arrangement

This role is a site-focused, field-driven leadership position that requires flexibility and travel based on active project locations.

  • Travel Commitments: Travel to project sites and flexibility in work location based on active assignments. Full eligibility to travel for work across Canada and potentially the USA is required.
  • Rotational Structure: Rotations, schedules, and travel requirements vary by project (e.g., local site-based, rotational/FIFO, or hybrid assignments).
  • Environment: Candidates must be completely comfortable operating within remote locations and demanding field environments typical of mining civil construction.
How to Apply

Please submit your resume outlining:

  • Relevant civil earthworks construction superintendent experience.
  • Exposure to specific civil scopes such as tailings dam construction, haul road construction, water management, and bulk earthworks.
  • Experience with rock excavation/blasting interfaces and production tracking.
  • Experience leading foremen, crews, and subcontractors on active job sites.
  • History working in remote, rotational, or FIFO environments.

Only candidates selected for further consideration will be contacted.
