What is it like working a FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) schedule in construction?

Working in a FIFO Construction role means you’ll likely spend several weeks at a remote site followed by designated days off, following a set roster such as 2 weeks on/1 week off. The work environment is generally fast-paced and team-oriented, with employees living in communal accommodations and sharing amenities during rotations. Adapting to long hours, variable weather, and being away from home are common challenges, but many find the camaraderie and unique experiences rewarding. FIFO roles often provide excellent earning potential, and successful construction workers may progress to supervisory or project management positions with experience. Staying proactive about your well-being and communication helps make the FIFO lifestyle both productive and sustainable.

What is FIFO construction?

FIFO construction refers to a method used in project management and scheduling where tasks or materials are completed or used in the order they arrive, following the First-In, First-Out principle. In construction, this approach helps ensure materials are used efficiently and projects stay on schedule, often requiring coordination and proper inventory management. Construction workers may need skills in logistics, planning, and safety protocols to implement FIFO effectively.

Is it hard to get hired by FIFO?

Getting hired for FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) construction jobs can be competitive due to the specialized skills and certifications required, such as safety training and relevant trade experience. Employers often prioritize candidates with strong work history, physical fitness, and the ability to work in remote, often challenging environments. Having proper certifications and a good safety record can improve chances of employment in FIFO construction roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fifo Construction position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a FIFO Construction role, you need strong technical construction skills, relevant trade qualifications, and proven experience in remote or large-scale project environments. Familiarity with construction management software, safety certifications such as White Card, and operating various machinery or tools are typically required. Excellent adaptability, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities help professionals succeed in challenging and ever-changing conditions. These skills and attributes are vital for maintaining productivity, meeting safety standards, and fostering collaboration during extended periods away on site.

Do FIFO jobs pay well?

FIFO construction jobs often offer competitive wages due to the demanding schedule and remote work environment. Pay rates can vary based on experience, skills, and location, with some positions including allowances for travel and accommodation. Overall, FIFO roles tend to pay higher than similar non-FIFO positions in the construction industry.

What is a FIFO Construction job?

A FIFO (Fly-In Fly-Out) construction job involves traveling to a remote worksite for a set period before returning home for scheduled time off. These jobs are common in mining, oil and gas, and large infrastructure projects. Workers are provided with transportation, accommodation, and meals while on-site. Shifts can be long and demanding, but the pay is often competitive, and time off allows for extended breaks.

Can Americans get FIFO jobs?

Fifo Construction jobs typically refer to fly-in fly-out positions common in industries like mining and construction, often requiring workers to travel to remote sites. Americans can apply for FIFO jobs if they meet the employer’s requirements, including relevant skills, certifications, and work visas or permits for the country where the job is located. Availability depends on the employer and local regulations, but nationality alone does not usually disqualify applicants if they meet all other criteria.

Job description

Description:

Job Summary

The Forklift Operator is responsible for safely handling, moving, and organizing cement products—including bagged cement, pallets, and bulk materials—within the warehouse and yard. This role ensures efficient inbound and outbound material flow, accurate inventory handling, and adherence to strict safety standards. The operator will support loading/unloading delivery trucks, staging shipments, and maintaining warehouse organization.

Key Responsibilities

Material Handling

  • Operate sit-down or standup forklifts to transport cement products between receiving, storage, and shipping areas.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks and trailers; ensure pallets are secure and properly positioned.
  • Move raw materials, such as palletized cement or additives, to assigned storage bays or production areas.
  • Stack, relocate, and organize palletized cement products in yard/warehouse storage zones.

Inventory & Documentation

  • Scan, label, and track inventory using RF scanners or warehouse management systems.
  • Assist with cycle counts, stock rotation (FIFO), and inventory audits.
  • Complete basic shipping/receiving paperwork such as bills of lading or manifests.

Safety & Compliance

  • Perform pre-shift equipment inspections and follow OSHA required safety procedures.
  • Maintain safe speeds, clear visibility, and proper fork positioning during operation.
  • Identify and report workplace hazards, load damage, or equipment malfunctions immediately.
  • Keep work areas—including cement storage and loading zones—clean, organized, and free of debris.

Yard & Warehouse Support

  • Transport cement pallets safely across yard storage areas, similar to concrete product yard operations.
  • Unload raw materials such as rebar, aggregate, bagged cement, or other inbound materials as needed.
  • Follow production or shipping schedules to ensure timely order fulfillment.

Maintenance & Housekeeping

  • Perform minor forklift upkeep, including battery checks, fuel/fluids monitoring, and cleaning.
  • Report mechanical issues so equipment can be removed from service if unsafe.
Requirements:
  • Experience operating forklifts in warehouse, construction, or concrete product environments preferred.
  • Ability to safely handle heavy materials and work in dusty, outdoor/indoor conditions typical in cement distribution.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in outdoor environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.

Work Equipment

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders, reach, squat, push, and pull objects.
  • Comfortable working around dust, noise, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to regularly lift to 50-75 pounds.
  • Ability to tolerate working outdoors in all temperatures and weather conditions.
  • The job may involve long hours, including early mornings, weekends, and occasional overtime to meet delivery schedules.
