Position Summary

Provides assistance to the various divisions in Facilities Management with engineering support for the management, maintenance and repair of campus facilities and infrastructure. Ensure oversight of technical designs for the department's repairs to building systems and small construction contracts; engineering support and assistance to the division departments maintaining the campus buildings' electrical, plumbing, heating/air-conditioning, and other systems; and provides oversight of Elon's energy management program and monitoring of utility usage.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering with more than 8 years of experience with the following relevant work experience: Mechanical or electrical engineering design or project management in large commercial or educational facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Position requires a broad-based knowledge of all phases of major building design, construction, and maintenance methods with a strong background in mechanical equipment and HVAC systems, including energy management system interfaces. Knowledgeable in design and operation of building systems; specification writing and interpretation; construction budgeting and control; and a basic understanding of current federal, state, and local environmental rules, regulations, and building codes.

Required Other Training, Certifications, or Licensing

A Professional Engineer's (PE) license is required. Certified Energy Manager, LEED, and/or PMP certification is desirable.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for the development of proposals, studies and engineering drawings for repair/replacement of mechanical systems in the areas of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, and fire protection systems to support Facilities Management initiatives.
  • Provides leadership and direction for the BAS Application Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, and Utilities Clerk in the operation, expansion and utilization of building controls, existing preventive maintenance program, and utilities billing.
  • Serve as an engineering liaison to the University's Planning, Design and Construction for Facilities Management.  Review engineering drawings and specifications, construction submittals, and other documents to ensure compliance with university standards.  Responsible for the management of the Elon's Facilities Management technical library, plans/as-built drawings and university mapping.  Maintain, monitor and manage all major equipment warranties.
  • Serves as the University's Energy Manager, advising Facilities Management leadership of desirable energy conservation initiatives.  Monitor and analyze energy consumption, budgeting and costs; oversee campus metering and energy monitoring programs; identify funding opportunities; and coordinate energy retrofit projects and energy audits, including a retro-commissioning/monitoring-based commissioning process for campus facilities.
