What is a fabrication welding?

A Fabrication Welding job involves cutting, shaping, and assembling metal components to create structures or products. Welders in this role use various welding techniques, such as MIG, TIG, and arc welding, to join metal parts according to blueprints or specifications. They may also be responsible for operating machinery, inspecting welds for quality, and ensuring that finished products meet industry standards. Fabrication welders work in industries like construction, manufacturing, and automotive, requiring strong technical skills and attention to detail.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in fabrication welding?

To thrive in Fabrication Welding, you need strong knowledge of welding techniques, blueprint reading, and metal fabrication, often supported by a technical diploma or certification in welding. Experience with welding equipment such as MIG, TIG, and arc welders, as well as certifications like AWS (American Welding Society) credentials, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills in this trade. These competencies are critical for producing precise, high-quality metal structures safely and efficiently while meeting project specifications.

What does a typical workday look like for someone in fabrication welding?

A typical day in Fabrication Welding involves interpreting blueprints or technical drawings, preparing metal parts, setting up welding equipment, and performing various welding processes such as MIG, TIG, or stick welding. You may be responsible for inspecting finished welds for quality, making necessary corrections, and maintaining tools or machines. Collaboration with engineers, project managers, and fellow fabricators is common to ensure all specifications and safety standards are met. The work environment is usually fast-paced and can be physically demanding, but offers a strong sense of accomplishment in building durable, custom structures.

What does a fabrication welder do?

A fabrication welder joins metal parts together using welding techniques such as MIG, TIG, or stick welding, often working with steel, aluminum, or other metals. They read blueprints, set up welding equipment, and ensure welds meet safety and quality standards in manufacturing or construction environments.

At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable-unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.

The Teamย

As part of theManufacturingorganization, the Fabrication and welding shop produces complex structural and mechanical assemblies that meet demanding quality and performance requirements. The team combines skilled craftsmanship with disciplined manufacturing practices to support production.ย

The Role

Valar Atomics is looking for a Fabrication/Welding Lead to run day-to-day operations on our weld shop floor and lead a growing team of welders and fabricators. You will own production scheduling, weld quality, and safety standards for components going into our modular nuclear reactor systems, while mentoring the team and partnering closely with engineering and quality. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for building both the team and the process from the ground up.ย

  • Lead, schedule, and mentor a team of welders and fabricators across daily production.ย
  • Own weld quality standards; review and approve WPS, and troubleshoot process or quality issues on the floor.ย
  • Partner with Engineering and QC to translate drawings and specifications into repeatable, nuclear-grade fabrication processes.ย
  • Coordinate production priorities and timelines with the Manufacturing Manager to hit build schedules.ย
  • Champion shop safety, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives on the floor.ย
  • Hire, train, and develop welders as the team scales; conduct performance reviews and skills assessments.ย
  • Maintain documentation for weld travelers, certifications, and non-conformances per quality procedures.

Basic Qualificationsย

  • 8+ years of professional welding/fabrication experience, including 2+ years in a lead or supervisory role.ย
  • AWS Certified Welder (or equivalent) with strong GTAW (TIG) proficiency on stainless steel and exotic alloys.ย
  • Demonstrated ability to read and work from complex engineering drawings, weld symbols, and WPS documentation.ย
  • Experience with pressure vessel or code welding (ASME Section IX, B31.3, and similar).ย
  • Proven track record leading, training, or mentoring a team of welders or fabricators.ย
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced startup manufacturing environment with evolving processes.ย
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a shop-floor setting with appropriate PPE.ย

Preferred Skills and Experienceย

  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent.ย
  • Experience welding or leading teams in nuclear, aerospace, or other highly regulated quality environments.ย
  • Experience standing up welding processes, procedures, or a new production line from scratch.ย
  • Familiarity with ASME Section IX / Section III code welding and NDE processes.ย
