What is an F&I assistant?

F&I Assistants, or Finance and Insurance Assistants, support the finance and insurance department at automotive dealerships. They help process vehicle sales paperwork, assist with loan and lease applications, and ensure compliance with legal and dealership policies. Their role also includes preparing documents, communicating with customers about financing options, and coordinating with banks and insurance companies. F&I Assistants play a crucial part in ensuring a smooth transaction process for both the dealership and its customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an F&I assistant?

To thrive as an F&I Assistant, you need a solid understanding of automotive finance processes, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or relevant administrative experience. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), finance software, and sometimes certification in F&I or compliance is valuable. Strong organizational skills, discretion, and excellent customer service abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure efficient processing of financial documents, regulatory compliance, and a positive customer experience in automotive sales environments.

How does an F&I assistant typically collaborate with sales and finance teams in a dealership setting?

An F&I Assistant works closely with both the sales and finance teams to ensure a smooth transition of customers from the vehicle selection process to finalizing financing and insurance paperwork. They often coordinate with sales consultants to gather necessary customer information and support the F&I Manager by preparing documents, verifying data, and scheduling customer appointments. This role requires strong communication skills and attention to detail, as F&I Assistants are pivotal in maintaining workflow efficiency and customer satisfaction. Collaboration is usually fast-paced, and team members rely on the F&I Assistant to keep processes organized and compliant with dealership policies.

What is the difference between F&I Assistant vs F&I Manager?

Work EnvironmentSupport role in dealership finance office, assisting with paperworkOversees finance department, interacts directly with customers and lenders
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in automotive dealerships, entry to mid-level positionUsed in larger dealerships or groups, managerial role

The F&I Assistant primarily supports the finance department by handling paperwork and assisting the F&I Manager. The F&I Manager has a broader role, managing the finance team, negotiating with lenders, and ensuring compliance. While both roles require knowledge of automotive finance, the Assistant position is more entry-level, focusing on support tasks, whereas the Manager oversees the entire finance operation.

Job description

Considering a career with Ken Garff Automotive Group means you are in for a great ride (excuse the car metaphor)! What you'll do as a F&I Manager:
  • Treat every customer in a friendly, professional manner, regardless of the customers financing or purchasing decision, or credit ability
  • Manage overall production of reserve income, F&I product penetrations and income, and per-vehicle retail (PVR) averages in accordance with company standards
  • Set up monthly forecasting in conjunction with the sales department forecasting; Use the forecast to establish and meet monthly objectives
  • Submit all paperwork to (and obtain approval from) finance sources on all finance deals; finalize all paperwork necessary in the car deal in a timely manner and submit to the accounting office
  • Collect and safeguard all money and fees required in the transactions

  • Assist the dealership in managing deal and cash flow in accordance with the company Contracts-In-Transit (CIT) guidelines

At first glance, there's nothing remarkable at Ken Garff. Our uniforms aren't flashy, and our buildings look a lot like the competition. You may not see it right at first, but if you listen you'll hear. Because listening isn't just something we do; it's part of who we are. It's how we show that what we absolutely value the most (far more than buildings, uniforms or cars) is our people. And we thrive on treating them right. We listen because we believe listening matters. We're just different that way.
Will you join us as a new F&I Manager? Will you throw your energy and focus behind what we're doing? Will you live our values and do things differently than you've ever done them? Will you listen and build trust and foster relationships? This organization, that started as an idea by a man named Ken Garff way back in 1932, needs one thing to keep its vision intact and its purpose of reinventing an industry moving forward. It needs you.
We are an Equal Opportunity Employer
