What is an F&I assistant?

F&I Assistants, or Finance and Insurance Assistants, support the finance and insurance department at automotive dealerships. They help process vehicle sales paperwork, assist with loan and lease applications, and ensure compliance with legal and dealership policies. Their role also includes preparing documents, communicating with customers about financing options, and coordinating with banks and insurance companies. F&I Assistants play a crucial part in ensuring a smooth transaction process for both the dealership and its customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an F&I assistant?

To thrive as an F&I Assistant, you need a solid understanding of automotive finance processes, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or relevant administrative experience. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), finance software, and sometimes certification in F&I or compliance is valuable. Strong organizational skills, discretion, and excellent customer service abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure efficient processing of financial documents, regulatory compliance, and a positive customer experience in automotive sales environments.

How does an F&I assistant typically collaborate with sales and finance teams in a dealership setting?

An F&I Assistant works closely with both the sales and finance teams to ensure a smooth transition of customers from the vehicle selection process to finalizing financing and insurance paperwork. They often coordinate with sales consultants to gather necessary customer information and support the F&I Manager by preparing documents, verifying data, and scheduling customer appointments. This role requires strong communication skills and attention to detail, as F&I Assistants are pivotal in maintaining workflow efficiency and customer satisfaction. Collaboration is usually fast-paced, and team members rely on the F&I Assistant to keep processes organized and compliant with dealership policies.

What is the difference between F&I Assistant vs F&I Manager?

AspectF&I AssistantF&I Manager
CredentialsBasic automotive finance training, sometimes a licenseAdvanced finance and management certifications, licensing often required
Work EnvironmentSupport role in dealership finance office, assisting with paperworkOversees finance department, interacts directly with customers and lenders
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in automotive dealerships, entry to mid-level positionUsed in larger dealerships or groups, managerial role

The F&I Assistant primarily supports the finance department by handling paperwork and assisting the F&I Manager. The F&I Manager has a broader role, managing the finance team, negotiating with lenders, and ensuring compliance. While both roles require knowledge of automotive finance, the Assistant position is more entry-level, focusing on support tasks, whereas the Manager oversees the entire finance operation.

Job description

Automotive Finance Assistant / F&I Coordinator

Thornton Chevrolet is looking for an energetic, organized, and customer-focused individual to join our team as an Automotive Finance Assistant / F&I Coordinator.

No automotive or finance experience is required. We are looking for the right person, not the perfect résumé. If you have a great personality, enjoy working with people, are eager to learn, and take pride in being organized and detail-oriented, we’ll provide the training.

This is a customer-facing position that combines administrative responsibilities with opportunities to work directly with customers and grow into the Finance & Insurance (F&I) department.

What You’ll Do:
  • Package completed vehicle deals for lender funding.
  • Submit contracts to lenders and follow up until funded.
  • Review deal jackets for accuracy and completeness.
  • Process and remit vehicle service contracts, warranties, and other protection products.
  • Submit manufacturer incentive claims for new vehicle sales.
  • Assist customers with completing and signing purchase and finance documents.
  • Work closely with the Sales, Finance, and Accounting departments.
  • Maintain organized and accurate records while ensuring compliance with dealership and lender requirements.

Growth Opportunity:
This position also serves as a backup for our Finance Managers during vacations, days off, and other absences.
As your training progresses, you’ll have the opportunity to:
  • Meet with customers during vehicle delivery.
  • Present Finance & Insurance products.
  • Explain financing paperwork and protection options.
  • Help customers make informed decisions.
  • Deliver an exceptional customer experience from start to finish.

If you enjoy talking with people and want to build a long-term career with unlimited growth potential, this is an excellent opportunity.

Who We’re Looking For:
We’re looking for someone who:
  • Has an outgoing, positive, and engaging personality.
  • Loves interacting with people and providing exceptional customer service.
  • Is eager to learn and grow professionally.
  • Is extremely organized and detail-oriented.
  • Takes pride in doing things correctly the first time.
  • Can multitask and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
  • Is dependable, punctual, and has a strong work ethic.
  • Is comfortable using computers and learning new software.
  • Is confident communicating with customers and coworkers.
  • Wants to build a long-term career—not just find another job.

Automotive experience is NOT required. Finance experience is NOT required. We will teach you everything you need to know. We can’t teach personality, enthusiasm, integrity, and a willingness to learn—that’s what we’re looking for.

Compensation & Benefits:
  • Competitive salary.
  • Performance-based bonus opportunities.
  • Additional earning potential while providing F&I coverage.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k).
  • Paid vacation and holidays.
  • Ongoing training and career advancement opportunities.

Schedule:
This is a full-time, five-day-per-week position.
  • Monday–Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Employees typically work every Saturday with approximately one Saturday off each month.
  • One scheduled weekday off (Monday–Thursday) each week.
  • Occasional additional hours may be required to assist customers and complete vehicle deliveries.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to join a great team, learn valuable skills, grow your career, and make a difference in our customers’ experience, we’d love to meet you.

Apply today and become part of the Thornton Chevrolet family!
