Job description

Position Summary...About the team
The Experience Strategy & Innovation team works end-to-end across Sam’s Club business units to uncover what matters most to members and associates and turn those insights into actionable strategies that improve experiences to create business outcomes. We’re a flat, hands-on team that moves with rigor and speed. We use human insights to define the what and why so our partners can build the how.
Role summary
As a Distinguished Experience Strategist (Individual Contributor), you will partner closely with Research and senior business leaders to define the most critical experience problems to solve, uncover root causes, and drive prioritized strategies that improve end-to-end experiences and business performance. You will set enterprise-level direction through clearly articulated recommendations and standards, measurement, and executive influence—without direct authority. What you'll do...
  • Define and evolve experience architecture across key journeys and channels (digital, physical, service, and operational), including experience principles, standards, and patterns that scale.
  • Establish experience standards and governance (quality bars, decision frameworks, intake/prioritization, experience reviews) that align cross-functional partners (e.g., Product, Design, Engineering/Tech, Marketing, Operations, Service).
  • Create and maintain end-to-end journeys plus service blueprints and ecosystem maps that clarify cross-functional dependencies and expose experience gaps.
  • Define and drive measurement that links experience quality to business outcomes; ensure consistent instrumentation and reporting (e.g., conversion/engagement, satisfaction, retention/loyalty, operational efficiency, cost-to-serve).
  • Lead breakthrough initiatives (e.g., new service models, advanced analytics integration, AI-assisted design/research practices, personalization, proactive support) from concept through enterprise adoption.
  • Partner on experience-focused research and insight synthesis (ethnography, usability, behavioral analytics, VOC/longitudinal feedback loops) with research team to identify root causes of friction and unmet needs.
  • Translate insights into strategic bets and multi-year roadmaps aligned to enterprise strategy and operating model constraints.
  • Establish repeatable experimentation and validation frameworks for pilots (hypotheses, success criteria, feasibility, scalability) and convert learnings into actionable initiatives and standards.
  • Serve as principal advisor to VP-level leaders and councils on experience investment prioritization, tradeoffs, and transformation sequencing.

Distinguished-level competencies
  • Experience systems thinking: Deep understanding of how experiences, operations, technology, and business models interact—and how to design for outcomes at scale.
  • Cross-channel service design: Ability to unify digital, physical, and service experiences into coherent end-to-end journeys.
  • Workshop facilitation: Structures and leads cross-functional working sessions to align on problems, identify opportunities, and accelerate decisions.
  • Storytelling: Crafts persuasive executive-level narratives that clarify vision, priorities, tradeoffs, and risks.
  • Concept creation: Create proof-of-concepts and minimal prototypes to inform and align on the experience vision.
  • Insight-to-roadmap translation: Converts mixed-method evidence into priorities, sequencing, and investment narratives.
  • Experimentation at enterprise scale: Runs pilots that are measurable, repeatable, and operationally feasible.
  • Executive influence without authority: Aligns senior stakeholders through governance, facilitation, and decision frameworks.
  • Innovation leadership: Applies analytics and AI responsibly to improve experience quality, decision-making, and research velocity.
