Principal Project Manager (Hybrid)

As a Principal Associate, you will be part of a team supporting and/or overseeing a wide range of projects and governance programs within the Bank Operations Command Center PMO organization for the Retail Bank. In this exciting role, you will lead projects and programs that are Enterprise or Division wide, that impact bank customers. You are not just a task-tracker; you are a strategic partner who builds structure out of ambiguity, leads a team to complete milestones, identifies risks, and thoroughly documents the project's lifecycle. While this is an individual contributor role, you will be expected to operate at a "Differentiator" level mentoring junior project managers and influencing senior leadership to drive projects and demonstrate project management principles.

General Responsibilities:

  • Lead Enterprise wide or Division wide initiatives with cross-functional bank operations impact by providing strategic direction to stakeholders

  • Build relationships with cross-functional project stakeholders to provide strategic and tactical thought partnership to hold accountability and effectively drive project delivery

  • Work autonomously to proactively design and evolve project plans, bringing the ability to quickly put structure in place to manage work in a dynamic complex environment

  • Design, develop, and manage project plans in a complex dynamic environment, revising needs to meet changing requirements

  • Leverage problem solving and influencing skills to ensure project plans deliver on intent

  • Document projects appropriately to storytell the journey of the project, ensuring decision points and issues are historically preserved

  • Identify potential risks and process breakdowns, document issues, and drive them toward remediation

  • Exhibit outstanding influencing and results oriented skills to effectively drive project / program efforts

  • Serve as a formal or informal mentor to junior PMs; share subject matter expertise and model the "Differentiator" behaviors of the PMO competency model, raising the quality of work for all project managers in the organization

  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills (compelling, clear, concise) in multiple formats (agendas, minutes, status), in order to share status, risks, wins, and escalate issues to core project team members, stakeholders, and executives/sponsors

  • Demonstrate exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization

  • Showcase proven ability to manage multiple complex initiations simultaneously, with a track record of delivering on time

Location: Center 2 (McLean, VA) or West Creek 5 (Richmond, VA) - This role is hybrid, where you will be expected to spend 3 days per week working in the office and the remainder of the week working virtually.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Military experience

  • At least 5 Years Project Management experience

  • At least 2 yearsof experience working with a product, technical, or software engineering team

  • At least 1 year of experience working in a Project Management Office (PMO) environment

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree

  • At least 6 years of Project Management experience

  • Lean, Agile, or Six Sigma certification

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $120,800 - $137,900 for Principal Project Manager


Richmond, VA: $109,900 - $125,400 for Principal Project Manager










Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
