What is an exempt accountant?

An Exempt Accountant is a professional responsible for managing, analyzing, and reporting financial records for an organization, and the term 'exempt' typically refers to their status under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). This means they are salaried employees who are exempt from overtime pay requirements due to the nature of their job duties and level of responsibility. Exempt Accountants generally handle complex accounting tasks, ensure compliance with financial regulations, and may oversee other staff. Their work is crucial for accurate financial reporting and strategic planning within a business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an exempt accountant?

To thrive as an Exempt Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, generally supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as SAP, Oracle, or QuickBooks and certifications like CPA are commonly required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills and qualities ensure accurate financial management, regulatory adherence, and the ability to provide valuable insights for business decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by exempt accountants when managing compliance with changing tax laws?

Exempt Accountants often encounter challenges staying updated with frequently changing tax regulations and ensuring that their organization's financial practices remain compliant. Location: Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Schedule: Monday through Friday  |  9:00am to 4:00pm

Work Type: Hybrid (3 days onsite required)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation: $85,000 to $100,000 annually, depending on experience and alignment with the role

Who We Are

At Clearly Filtered, our mission is to help people live well, starting with the water they drink. We build high-performance filtration products backed by science and transparency, and we hold ourselves to a simple standard: every person who finds us should be better off for it.

About the Role

We're looking for a hands-on Senior Accountant to own the day-to-day financial operations that keep Clearly Filtered running accurately and efficiently. This is a high-ownership role for someone who takes genuine pride in clean books, timely closes, and trustworthy data, combining a strong foundation in transactional accounting with working knowledge of inventory and COGS in a product-based business.

This role is hybrid, based in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA with a minimum of 3 days onsite per week. Please apply only if you're able to meet this requirement.

What You'll Do

Accounting Operations

Keep the books accurate, current, and closed on time every month.

  • Manage full-cycle accounts payable including invoice processing, vendor payments, and reconciliation
  • Reconcile revenues against the point of sale system
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy through regular journal entries, reconciliations, and adjustments
  • Own the month-end close process, preparing accruals, reconciling accounts, and ensuring books are closed on schedule
  • Manage monthly credit card transactions and reconcile with department heads
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies with clear documentation

Inventory & COGS Accounting

Ensure inventory balances and cost of goods sold are accurate and audit-ready at all times.

  • Manage inventory valuation and reconciliation across all SKUs and locations
  • Track and analyze cost of goods sold, surfacing variances and insights to Finance leadership
  • Review and maintain bills of materials to ensure accurate cost inputs
  • Reconcile inventory records between the ERP system, 3PL reports, and the general ledger
  • Support periodic physical inventory counts and resolve discrepancies

Financial Reporting

Provide accurate data and analysis that supports business decisions.

  • Assist with monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
  • Support KPI dashboard maintenance and variance analysis
  • Compile financial data and analysis for internal reporting needs

What You Bring

Required

  • 4 to 6 years of progressive accounting experience with ownership of AP, AR, and month-end close
  • Strong experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Working knowledge of inventory accounting and COGS in a product-based or DTC environment
  • Proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets, comfortable with reconciliations, pivot tables, and data analysis
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational skills and consistent follow-through
  • Able to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-moving environment

Preferred

  • Experience in a DTC, CPG, or e-commerce company
  • Familiarity with Luminous, NetSuite, or other inventory management systems
  • Experience reconciling 3PL inventory data against internal records
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

What Success Looks Like

  • Month-end close is completed on schedule with clean reconciliations and no recurring discrepancies
  • Inventory balances tie to the general ledger and inventory management system at all times
  • COGS is accurately tracked and variances are identified and explained proactively
  • Financial records are organized, audit-ready, and accessible when needed
  • Finance leadership can rely on the data without having to verify it themselves

What We Offer

  • Hybrid work flexibility with 9am to 4pm working hours
  • Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance benefits
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid holidays, floating holiday, and PTO
  • The opportunity to be part of a growing brand focused on helping people live healthier lives

What To Expect

Our interview process is designed to help us get to know you beyond your resume while giving you a clear picture of the role, team, and our work environment.

The process typically includes:

  • An initial video interview with a member of our People team
  • A second video interview with the hiring manager focused on accounting expertise, operational judgment, and problem-solving
  • A potential technical assignment to assess your role-specific skills
  • A final onsite interview with team members and cross-functional partners

We aim to keep the process thoughtful, communicative, and respectful of your time.
