Executive Strategy information

What is executive strategy?

Executive Strategy refers to the process by which top-level leaders, such as CEOs and senior executives, develop and implement plans to achieve an organization's long-term objectives. This involves analyzing internal and external factors, setting goals, allocating resources, and making decisions that guide the overall direction of the company. Executive strategists often collaborate with other leaders to ensure alignment across departments and to adapt to changing market conditions. Their work is critical for sustaining growth, competitive advantage, and organizational success.

How does an executive strategy professional typically collaborate with other departments to drive company-wide initiatives?

Executive Strategy professionals play a pivotal role in aligning departmental objectives with the organization's long-term goals. They frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with leaders from finance, operations, marketing, and product teams to ensure initiatives are strategically sound and feasible. Regular meetings, strategic workshops, and project management tools are commonly used to maintain clear communication and accountability. This collaborative approach not only helps break down silos but also ensures that strategic decisions are informed by diverse perspectives and expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive strategy professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Executive Strategy professional, you need strong analytical thinking, business acumen, and a background in business administration or a related field, often supported by an MBA or equivalent experience. Familiarity with strategic planning tools, data analytics platforms, and financial modeling software is typically required. Outstanding leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies enable effective decision-making, drive organizational growth, and ensure successful implementation of strategic initiatives.

Job Description

The VP of CBB Executive Strategy leads the development of enterprise-impacting strategic perspectives for the bank's most senior audiences, including the Managing Committee, CEO, and Board of Directors. This role sits at the center of the organization's most critical strategic questions-synthesizing internal and external inputs into clear, actionable points of view that guide decision-making at the highest levels.

The leader operates with both depth and speed, bringing structure to complex, ambiguous challenges and translating them into concise, compelling strategic positions for executive consumption.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Thought Leadership

  • Lead the development of CBB's highest-priority strategic perspectives, including market expansion, growth pathways, and competitive positioning
  • Frame and structure responses to critical, time-sensitive strategic questions from the CEO, Managing Committee, and senior leadership
  • Apply an external lens by integrating market trends, competitor activity, and macroeconomic dynamics into recommendations
  • Develop clear, evidence-based strategic positions and influence alignment across senior stakeholders

Executive & Board Engagement

  • Develop high-impact materials and strategic narratives for CEO and Board-level audiences
  • Translate complex analyses into concise, decision-ready insights that enable rapid, informed action
  • Continuously refine messaging and recommendations based on executive feedback and evolving priorities

Strategic Synthesis & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Integrate inputs from across the organization (e.g., finance, product, channels, risk) into a cohesive, enterprise-level strategic view
  • Lead cross-functional workstreams to gather, challenge, and align perspectives across business and functional partners
  • Apply rigorous analytical thinking to distill complex data into clear implications and recommendations
  • Balance quality and speed-delivering high-impact insights under tight timelines and shifting priorities

Key Outcomes

  • Strong confidence from the Board and Managing Committee in the clarity, coherence, and credibility of CBB strategic perspectives
  • Accelerated, higher-quality executive decision-making on the bank's most critical strategic priorities
  • Consistent, enterprise-aligned strategic narrative across governance forums
  • Reduced cycle time from strategic question to executive-ready recommendation

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • 10+ years of experience in strategy, corporate development, consulting, or financial services leadership roles
  • Deep understanding of consumer and business banking and broader financial services dynamics
  • Proven ability to connect external trends, competitive dynamics, and internal performance to actionable strategy
  • Exceptional analytical and synthesis skills, with the ability to translate complex inputs into clear, decision-ready outputs
  • Strong executive presence, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate complex ideas succinctly and effectively
  • Demonstrated track record of developing materials that influence senior executive decision-making
  • Operates with urgency and responsiveness in fast-paced, high-visibility environments
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and rapidly evolving priorities
  • Highly effective relationship builder with the ability to influence across senior stakeholders
