Position Title: Manager, Mechatronics Engineering
Location: Durham, NC (Company HQ); not a remote position
Summary:
We are seeking a dynamic and results-driven Manager, Mechatronics Engineering to lead the development and execution of innovative mechatronic product solutions. This role is responsible for overseeing end-to-end product development initiatives, leading cross-functional engineering teams, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality solutions aligned with business objectives.
This is a high-impact leadership role that blends technical expertise, strategic execution, and people leadership to drive product innovation and operational excellence.
Position Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Management
Leads, coaches, and develops a team of mechatronics engineers and technical professionals, fostering a high-performance, accountable, and collaborative culture. Provides direction and oversight to cross-functional project teams across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain, while establishing team priorities, allocating resources, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Product Development & Program Leadership
Owns and drives the full lifecycle of mechatronic product development initiatives, from concept through commercialization. Leads multiple concurrent projects, ensuring delivery on scope, schedule, budget, and quality targets. Translates product requirements into executable engineering plans and technical specifications and partners closely with Product Management and Marketing to align deliverables with customer and market needs.
Technical & Strategic Oversight
Provides technical leadership in mechatronics system design, automation, and integration. Guides architectural decisions to ensure alignment with long-term product strategy, while evaluating risks, troubleshooting complex technical challenges, and implementing effective solutions.
Operational & Financial Management
Develops and manages project budgets, forecasts, and resource plans, while monitoring financial performance and driving cost optimization initiatives as needed. Ensures compliance with company policies, engineering standards, and regulatory requirements.
Stakeholder Engagement
Serves as a key liaison between Engineering, Product Management, Manufacturing, and Executive Leadership. Communicates project status, risks, and performance metrics to senior leadership and collaborates with external partners, suppliers, and customers as needed.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical field required; Master's degree preferred
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in mechatronics, automation, or product development engineering
  • 3+ years of leadership experience with direct or matrix team management

Technical Expertise
  • Strong knowledge of mechatronics systems, automation, and integrated product development
  • Experience with CAD tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD
  • Proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional engineering projects

Leadership & Business Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and drive results in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into business insights

Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Primarily office-based with occasional interaction in lab or production environments
  • Ability to sit, stand, and use a computer for extended periods
  • Occasional travel (up to 10-15%) may be required
