Executive Controller information

What is an executive controller?

Executive Controllers are senior financial professionals responsible for overseeing an organization's accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. They play a key role in developing financial strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and providing accurate financial data for decision-making. Typically, Executive Controllers manage accounting teams, coordinate audits, and work closely with other executives to support the organization's overall financial health. Their expertise is essential for risk management, budgeting, and strategic planning within a company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an executive controller?

To thrive as an Executive Controller, you need extensive experience in financial management, accounting principles, and a degree in finance or accounting, often supported by CPA or CMA certification. Mastery of ERP systems, financial reporting software, and advanced Excel skills are typically required. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial oversight, regulatory compliance, and strategic support for organizational growth.

How does an executive controller typically collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate financial reporting?

An Executive Controller works closely with department heads across the organization, such as operations, sales, and human resources, to gather accurate financial data and ensure compliance with internal policies. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to review budgets, discuss financial forecasts, and address any discrepancies in reporting. By fostering strong interdepartmental relationships, the Executive Controller helps ensure transparency, supports informed decision-making, and maintains the integrity of financial information. Effective communication and a proactive approach are key to managing these cross-functional partnerships.

Job description

Controller
Location: Nashville (Midtown)
RouteGenie is a modern, all-in-one software platform designed for medical transportation providers. We help businesses streamline and automate routing, scheduling, dispatching, billing, and fleet management-empowering them to reduce costs, improve on-time performance, and deliver better service to their customers and communities.
We're looking for a Controller to own our financial operations as we scale. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives in a high-ownership environment - someone who can create the financial structure, close the books, build the right controls, and also sit in a room with the CEO and translate the numbers into decisions. You'll oversee a small but capable team and work closely with our external bookkeeping and accounting partners to keep everything running cleanly.
This role is right for someone who has done this before at a growth-stage company and knows what good looks like - and who wants room to actually build it.
This is a hybrid position (4 days in office, 1 day remote) in Nashville. The salary range is $130,000-150,000, based on experience, plus an annual bonus opportunity.
What You'll Do
  • Month-end and year-end close - own the full process, top to bottom
  • General ledger oversight and integrity
  • Financial reporting for internal leadership and any external stakeholders
  • Budget vs. actuals analysis with meaningful commentary
  • Internal controls design and compliance
  • Audit preparation and external auditor coordination
  • Tax coordination with outside advisors
  • AR/AP team leadership (team of 2 + external bookkeeping firm)
  • Deferred revenue and revenue recognition
  • Investor relations with external capital providers for finance and tax related items

What We're Looking For
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2-3 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role. CPA preferred, or strong desire to achieve soon.
  • Experience at a growth-stage SaaS or technology company, required
  • Solid understanding of deferred revenue and revenue recognition (ASC 606), required
  • Proficient in modern accounting systems and experiencing leading an accounting system migration, a plus. ( ex. QBO, Ramp, Salesforce, Stripe, Sage, NetSuite)
  • Proven experience managing close processes and building controls infrastructure
  • Comfortable managing a small team and external partners
  • Strong judgment - knows when to escalate and when to just get it done
  • Excel fluency; comfort with financial modeling and variance analysis
  • Experience in healthcare technology or transportation/logistics software is a plus.

Why You'll Love Working Here
  • Customer-First Approach: From initial implementation through long-term support, our team builds solutions to support our customers for the long term.
  • Proven Results, Fast Innovation: Our platform empowers customers to complete more trips with the same fleet, cut down on no-shows, and improve billing accuracy. We are continuously innovating and investing in our platform so our customers can improve their operations
  • Culture of Collaboration & Improvement: You'll work alongside a team of passionate problem-solvers who share knowledge freely, celebrate wins together, and push each other to do their best work.
  • Room to Grow: At RouteGenie, you'll have opportunities to expand your skills, take on new challenges, and innovate in a fast-moving environment where your contributions truly matter.

Benefits & Perks
We know great work starts with a supportive environment. Here's what we offer:
  • Competitive pay with annual bonus opportunity
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off, sick time, holidays, and flexible core business hours
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company contribution
  • Company paid parking
  • Professional development opportunities, including training and conferences
  • A collaborative, mission-driven culture where your impact is seen and valued
