Our client, a leading North American energy infrastructure and commodity organization, is seeking a Commodity Market Risk Technical Manager to join its Market Risk team in Houston, Texas.

This is a highly visible individual contributor leadership role supporting commodity trading, marketing, and asset-backed businesses through advanced quantitative risk analysis, scenario modeling, and risk reporting. The ideal candidate combines deep commodity market expertise with strong technical and analytical capabilities, particularly in Power Markets, Value-at-Risk (VaR), Python development, and Power BI reporting.

The individual replacing this role previously brought a unique blend of commodity market risk, asset management, and nuclear generation experience—highlighting the caliber and breadth of expertise desired for this opportunity.

What You'll Do

  • Perform and oversee Value-at-Risk (VaR) calculations and risk analytics across commodity portfolios.
  • Develop and execute stress testing and scenario analysis to evaluate market exposure and business impacts.
  • Analyze quantitative market data supporting new transactions, portfolio optimization, and restructuring activities.
  • Evaluate Gross Margin at Risk and other advanced commodity risk metrics.
  • Build and enhance analytical tools, models, and reporting solutions using Python and Power BI.
  • Create dashboards, visualizations, and automated reporting solutions for risk and commercial stakeholders.
  • Support power generation, power marketing, natural gas, and broader commodity businesses.
  • Collaborate closely with traders, marketers, risk teams, treasury, corporate governance, and senior leadership.
  • Lead small-scale projects and drive continuous improvement initiatives within the risk organization.
  • Translate complex quantitative findings into actionable business recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in Commodity Market Risk, Quantitative Risk, Product Control, Trading Analytics, or related disciplines.
  • Strong commodity market experience with emphasis on:
  • Power Markets (strongly preferred)
  • Natural Gas
  • Crude Oil (preferred)
  • Advanced understanding of:
  • Value-at-Risk (VaR)
  • Stress Testing
  • Scenario Analysis
  • Commodity Pricing Methodologies
  • Market Fundamentals
  • Experience supporting commodity trading and marketing organizations.
  • Advanced Python programming and model development skills.
  • Strong Power BI development and data visualization expertise.
  • Experience developing analytical tools and reporting frameworks.
  • Deep knowledge of North American ISO/RTO power markets, including ERCOT, PJM, MISO, CAISO, SPP, NYISO, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of commodity valuation methodologies and price curve development.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Endur/Openlink (highly preferred; core platform utilized by the team).
  • Commodity-focused banking or investment banking experience.
  • Asset management or generation asset experience.
  • Experience supporting power plants, generation facilities, or physical energy assets.
  • Exposure to nuclear generation, power generation operations, or asset-backed trading businesses.
  • Data science, quantitative modeling, or advanced analytics experience.
