Job Description
This position is responsible for safe operation of production equipment and supervising the work of production shift at the Burns Harbor grain elevator. Assumes full responsibility of the plant and employees in the absence of Site Management Staff. Primary function is to project the value for safety in all employees and establish creditability to create and ensure the progress of the safety culture. Ensure quality grain products are transferred in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with established production schedules and in compliance with all applicable Company standards and government regulations.
Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions
  • Accountable for the safety, quality, and production of the team.
  • Operates unloading, loading, and transfer equipment and the computer control system for the site.
  • Conducts tests and makes decisions for the necessary adjustments to equipment in order to optimize site efficiency and to comply with all applicable Company standards and government regulations
  • Completes regular checks of staff and equipment throughout the shift to ensure that safety and standard operating procedures are followed and that Company standards are met
  • Reports all grain transfer equipment issues to Site Management Staff and/or maintenance.
  • Accountable for ensuring that established environmental procedures are followed and recordkeeping requirements are met
  • As directed by Site Management Staff, communicates the daily activities of shift staff and issues work assignments accordingly
  • Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and reporting procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to.
  • Ensures employees are provided required training for area and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work. Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner.
  • Promptly reports unsafe working conditions to management and communicates potential hazards to affected employees.
  • Promptly reports all incidents to management and conducts incident investigation as soon as practical; no later than 24 hours from time of incident
Additional Responsibilities
  • Serves as the liaison between the Site Management Staff and operations staff
  • Reports any equipment malfunction issues to maintenance and copies the site management staff.
  • Assists Management Staff in the collection of shift productivity information
  • Follows established procedures and recordkeeping requirements
  • Coordinates Elevator startups, shutdowns and product changeovers
  • Completes tasks as assigned by the Supervisor, Superintendent, and Assistant Superintendent.
  • As directed by Site management staff, performs job-related training with shift staff to increase efficiency and safety, as well as coaches shift staff on the Company's performance expectations
  • Accountable for setting and maintaining a positive leadership example for working safely.
  • Conducts initial investigation reports for safety and environmental accidents and near misses
  • Accepts and performs other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Basic qualification:
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Valid Driver's License
Preferred qualifications:
  • Technical degree or professional certification
  • Valid skid loader certification
Experience
Basic qualifications:
  • With a technical degree or professional certification: 1 year of production/transfer experience in an industrial elevator setting or in a rail yard or;2 years in a lead role in an industrial setting OR 1 year processing experience in a Grain Elevator facility
Preferred qualification:
  • Experience in the grain industry preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)
Basic qualifications:
  • Knowledge of barge loading processes, rail unload procedures and machinery, basic math skills and mechanical aptitude
    Knowledge of manufacturing regulatory and safety requirements (e.g., OSHA)
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders as well as work at heights, manage confined space entry, withstand extended periods of walking and standing; and move manufacturing materials, products and equipment of 50 pounds or more, which requires bending and lifting
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software (e.g., Excel and Word)
  • General knowledge of Process Safety Managment
  • Preferred qualifications:Safety minded, well organized, self-motivated and action oriented and able to work effectively in a team environmentAbility to grade grain

Additional Information
Equipment Used
  • River elevator machinery and operating equipment with buttons, dials, gauges and controls, including computers to manage the transfer process and data entry into Compu weigh system.
  • Rail unloading equipment, including door guns, vibrators, and skid loader
  • Use of proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
  • Compu Weigh equipment
Working Conditions
  • Regular Hours: 12 hour shifts with mandatory extended hours (nights/weekends/some holidays) as needed
  • Regular exposure to a variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions; regular exposure to dust and odors associated with unloading grain; occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise.
  • Heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products is required.
  • Regular stair climbing and extended periods of walking and standing in order to access and occasionally work in remote areas of the plant, heights and confined spaces.
  • Personal Protective Equipment will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations.
  • Call-ins or the extension of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects, attend training or to respond to emergencies.
Employee Supervision
  • Coordinates, monitors and assumes responsibility of the work of approximately 10 or more production employees in the industrial processing areas of a grain elevator.
Decision Making/Accountability
  • Operates equipment and machine controls for a rail and truck to barge river elevator. Coordinates the work of shift staff to meet daily production goals as directed. Facilitates communications to and from site management relating to the daily operations of the shift. Participates in plant start-ups and shut-downs as directed. Performs Maintenance as needed.
