Medical Technologist - PD Evening

Job Summary: Performs and results routine and specialized assignments associated with moderate and high complexity testing (CLIA) in any area of the Laboratory, e.g. Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology or Blood bank.

Shift: Evening
Hours: Variable Days - M-F / 3pm - 11pm (Every other Sat & Sun)
Job Essentials:
  1. Performs, records, and reports specimen analysis in one section of the laboratory in a timely manner, according to departmental policies and procedures. Interprets data and answers questions from physicians, nurse and staff concerning test requirements, results, or specimen handling.
  2. Operates complex laboratory equipment requiring special skills. Performs preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment per policy. Calibrates instruments as needed or when specified by manufacturer and/or regulations.
  3. Assesses the accuracy of all tests performed by adhering to the laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures; correlates clinical information and recognizes changes that are critical to patient care, identifies probable causes for irregular and atypical findings.
  4. Follows protocol for running and documenting Quality Control and CAP required proficiency testing according to policy and procedure. Collects, evaluates, and reports quality management data in order to monitor and improve laboratory performance.
  5. Prepares stains, reagents, solutions and mounts slides for microscopic analysis as needed. Observes and analyzes reactions. Discusses abnormal or unusual results or other problems with supervisors and other appropriate personnel.
  6. Responds appropriately to results with the status of STAT, call results, patient waiting, or timed specimens; informs nursing unit and/or physician of critical lab values with complete documentation on report.
  7. Checks work list status on computer to make sure all work is complete and/or accounted for.
  8. Performs non-technical functions such as inventory of supplies, and maintaining a clean, orderly work area.
  9. Disposes of sharps and needles properly.
  10. Instructs and checks work of personnel of less skill and experience. Assists in teaching students and new personnel and may participate in other teaching programs of the hospital.
  11. Interprets data and answers questions from physicians, nurses, and staff concerning test requirements, results, or specimen handling.
  12. Maintains open communication with supervisors, pathologists, and fellow employees to ensure optimal operation of department. Communicates pertinent information to other members of the health care team in a clinically relevant time frame to enhance the lab's contribution to patient care.
  13. Maintains a high level of quality and safety. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
  14. Meets regulatory and annual health assessment requirements.
  15. Displays a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
  16. Maintains high standards of service excellence in all interactions with patients, physicians, other departments and co-workers. Demonstrate the value of team concept on a consistent basis and offers supportive assistance to co-workers.
  17. Performs other duties as required by department.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • 0-2 years of experience in the Laboratory
  • Proficient in 1 specialty area of the Laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank or Microbiology)

  • Associate's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
  • At least 2 years of experience in the Laboratory
  • Proficient in 1 specialty area of the Laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank or Microbiology)

The rate of pay for each position will be determined based on a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, qualifications, skills, etc. The minimum rate does not include bonuses/incentives, differential pay or other forms of compensation.
