To thrive as an Estimator, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in construction, engineering, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree or professional experience. Familiarity with estimating software (such as Bluebeam, ProEst, or PlanSwift), cost databases, and Microsoft Excel is typically required. These competencies ensure accurate cost projections, minimize financial risks, and contribute to successful project planning and execution.

During the bidding process, they participate in meetings to review plans, discuss material options, and ensure that their cost projections align with project goals. This collaborative approach helps create accurate, competitive bids and supports successful project execution.

How much is an estimator paid?

Estimators typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. Senior estimators or those with specialized skills can earn higher salaries, and some may receive bonuses or benefits based on project size and complexity.

Being an estimator can be challenging as it requires strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to interpret project plans and specifications accurately. The role often involves tight deadlines and the need for precise cost calculations, but it also offers opportunities for skill development and industry knowledge. Success depends on experience, familiarity with estimating software, and understanding of construction or manufacturing processes.

Job description

Job Title: Estimator
Location: Irondale, AL
Company: Morris-Shea Bridge Company, Inc.

About Us:
At Morris-Shea Bridge Company Inc., accurate and competitive estimating is critical to successful deep foundation project pursuits. We are seeking an Estimator who can develop estimates from concept through final bid while evaluating plans, specifications, quantities, production assumptions, subcontractor and supplier pricing, scope risk, and bid strategy.

What You'll Do:

As the Estimator, you will help prepare deep foundation estimates and support successful project pursuits. Your primary responsibilities include:

  • Prepare Deep Foundation Estimates: Prepare and lead estimates for drilled shafts, driven pile, earth retention, ground improvement, and related specialty deep foundation scopes.
  • Develop Takeoffs and Costs: Review drawings, specifications, geotechnical information, and bid documents to develop takeoffs, production assumptions, labor, equipment, material, subcontractor, and indirect costs.
  • Evaluate Scope and Risk: Identify scope gaps, exclusions, alternates, constructability concerns, schedule impacts, and project risks that may affect pricing, bid strategy, or execution.
  • Coordinate Bids and Proposals: Coordinate bid documents, pricing requirements, estimate packages, clarifications, and proposal information with internal stakeholders, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients.
  • Partner with Operations: Work with operations, field leadership, and project teams to validate means and methods, crew sizing, equipment needs, schedule durations, and production expectations.
  • Manage Vendor and Project Relationships: Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, and other project partners.

Who You Are:

  • Experienced in Deep Foundation Estimating: You have at least two years of deep foundation estimating experience. General estimating experience alone does not meet this requirement.
  • Educated or Equivalently Experienced: You have a bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, business, or a related field preferred, or equivalent deep foundation estimating or construction experience may be considered.
  • Technically Skilled: You have strong plan reading, quantity takeoff, cost development, Microsoft suite, Excel, and estimating software skills.
  • Professional and Organized: You communicate clearly, write professionally, solve problems, keep organized, exercise sound judgment, coordinate with others, and can manage multiple estimates and deadlines.

What to expect:

  • Work Environment: This role is office-based in Irondale, AL and requires regular in-office work.
  • Estimating Tools and Information: You will work with drawings, specifications, geotechnical information, bid documents, pricing requirements, estimate packages, clarifications, and proposal information.
  • Collaboration: You will work closely with operations, field leadership, project teams, internal stakeholders, subcontractors, engineers, and other project partners.
  • Pace and Deadlines: You should be comfortable managing multiple estimates, detailed information, changing priorities, and bid deadlines.

Why Join Us?

  • Meaningful Impact: This role supports deep foundation project pursuits by helping develop accurate, competitive estimates and informed bid strategies.
  • Operations Partnership: You will work with estimating, preconstruction, operations, field leadership, and project teams to help connect bid strategy with project execution.
  • Benefits: Amazing health benefits, vacation time, 401k, company-provided cell phone plus other work equipment, and more!

Ready to Build Your Future with Us?

If you're looking for a role where you can make a meaningful impact through deep foundation estimating, bid coordination, cost development, and operations partnership, we'd love to hear from you! Let's construct a great future together!
