Job description

The Visual Storytelling division of ESPN Creative Studio is a team of designers, concept artists, animators, photo editors, developers and visual journalists whose work reaches across all platforms at ESPN.
We are responsible for concept, design, and direct television graphics for ESPN studio shows and live events as well as key art for ESPN+ original content. We also do editorial design and photography on the ESPN website and app, including custom microsites, special projects, branding, illustration, and data visualization.


ESPN Creative Studio is looking for a Senior Designer to join its award-winning Visual Storytelling team. This role will be responsible for creating, evolving, and maintaining ESPN’s world class brand system across internal and external touchpoints. This role requires outstanding visual design skills and a digital design mindset, with the ability to analyze, adapt, and work iteratively to meet business needs. You will collaborate with teams in Production, Streaming, Marketing, Editorial, Social, and Product to maintain high standards of creativity in various initiatives. Being a critical thinker who can communicate effectively and work well with diverse colleagues is essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Design: Deep knowledge of graphic design, motion graphics, animation principles, including common design principles such as typography, composition, and hierarchy.
  • Lead: Proven track record of proactively leading projects, driving them from initial concepts to polished, final deliverables that simplify workflows.
  • Scale: Define, evaluate and development an excellent design system and workflows that will fuel creative across our linear, digital, streaming and Marketing touchpoints for long-term success.
  • Collaborate: High standards for quality, communication and collaboration and thrive when you work with a wide range of teams and disciplines.
  • Curiosity: Driven by curiosity and strive to always understand the why behind it all. You are proactive, results-orientated, and thrive in ambiguity. You love to simplify complex problems, while prioritizing adaptability, while asking the right questions for the best solution.
  • Analyze: Drive exploration of ambiguous problems including identifying gaps and opportunities through research.
  • Iterate: Proven track record of sourcing feedback from stakeholders and research to refine and enhance designs. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 6 years of professional experience working within a creative studio or media organization.
  • Deep knowledge of graphic design, motion graphics, animation principles, including common design principles such as typography, composition, and hierarchy.
  • Demonstrated experience in practical design implementation at scale, promoting best practices for efficient and effective workflows.
  • Ability to lead projects that harness ESPN’s brand DNA across creative and business pillars.
  • Experience in design system development at scale across a large business.
  • Deep understanding of live productions and their insert packages to develop an industry-leading design system.
  • Proven project management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet multiple deadlines while providing transparent communication throughout.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and oral communication and storytelling skills.
  • Open to being mentored, and values giving and receiving constructive feedback to consistently grow.
  • Fluent with Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Asana (or similar tools) and Smartsheet.
  • Strong portfolio website showing a range of projects that demonstrate your design, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience design across live productions, streaming and digital.
  • Strong demonstrated knowledge of After Effects and Cinema 4D.
  • Redshift renderer / Octane renderer knowledge.
  • Expertise in Figma a plus.
  • Passion for sports!

The hiring range for this position in Bristol, CT is $87,100.00 to $116,800.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
