Job description

Esperanza Community Services supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, work, and thrive in their communities. We are committed to advancing inclusion, opportunity, and systems-level change that improve outcomes for the people we serve.

Position Summary: Esperanza is seeking experienced and well-connected leaders to join its Board of Directors, with a particular focus on strengthening the organizationโ€™s capacity in advocacy, public policy, and external relations.

We are especially interested in candidates with experience in government, public affairs, legal, or communications, and those with established relationships within local, county, and state government.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic oversight and governance as a member of the Board
  • Support and advise on advocacy, public policy, and government relations efforts
  • Leverage professional networks to advance Esperanzaโ€™s visibility and influence
  • Assist in building relationships with policymakers, community leaders, and partner organizations
  • Participate in board and committee meetings
  • Support the organizationโ€™s financial sustainability through a personal contribution and/or fundraising efforts (โ€œgive/getโ€)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more of the following: Government relations or public policy, Advocacy or public affairs, Legal, Public relations, media, or strategic communications
  • Established connections within local, county, and state government are strongly preferred
  • Commitment to disability services, equity, and community impact
  • Chicagoland candidates

Commitment: This is a volunteer (unpaid) position. Board members are expected to:

  • Attend approximately six board meetings per year (a mix of in-person and virtual), with a minimum of 75% attendance
  • Actively participate in at least one board committee
  • Support fundraising efforts, including participation in Esperanzaโ€™s annual board fundraiser (this year held in West Town on September 17)
  • Contribute their time, expertise, and networks to advance the organizationโ€™s mission
