What is equine retail?

Equine retail refers to the business of selling products and equipment specifically designed for horses and their owners. This includes items such as saddles, bridles, horse feed, grooming supplies, riding apparel, and stable equipment. Equine retail stores may operate as physical locations, online shops, or both, serving horse owners, trainers, and riders. These businesses play a vital role in supporting the equestrian community by providing essential goods and expert advice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in equine retail, and why are they important?

To excel in Equine Retail, you need knowledge of equine products, sales techniques, and customer service, often supported by experience in equestrian activities or related retail environments. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and basic merchandising tools is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a genuine passion for equine care help build trust and rapport with customers. These skills ensure customers receive expert advice and support, driving satisfaction and business growth in a specialized retail market.

What are some common challenges faced in an equine retail role, and how can they be managed?

In equine retail, one frequent challenge is staying updated with the latest products and trends, as customers often seek expert advice on feed, tack, and horse care items. Managing inventory and ensuring product availability can also be demanding, especially during peak seasons. Building strong relationships with both suppliers and customers is crucial, as is maintaining a knowledgeable and helpful presence in the store. Many roles require collaborating with a small team, so good communication and flexibility are key to handling daily tasks and customer requests efficiently.

Job description

Consignment Store Co-Manager

Saddlers Row | Lake Zurich, Illinois

About Saddlers Row

Saddlers Row is a premier equestrian retail destination offering an extensive selection of riding apparel, tack, equipment, and consignment merchandise. Our Consignment Store is an important part of the Saddlers Row experience, giving customers the opportunity to buy and sell quality equestrian apparel, tack, equipment, and horse-related items.

We are looking for an experienced, organized, and customer-focused Consignment Store Co-Manager to work alongside our Consignment Store Manager and help oversee the daily operation of the department.

Position Overview

The Consignment Store Co-Manager will share responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Saddlers Row Consignment Store. This is a hands-on position that combines customer service, sales, consignor relationships, inventory management, merchandising, and online selling.

The Co-Manager will work closely with the Consignment Store Manager and the larger Saddlers Row team to keep the department organized, profitable, and welcoming to both customers and consignors.

The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about the equestrian industry, highly organized, comfortable working independently, and willing to take initiative in a busy retail environment.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Store Operations

  • Share responsibility for the daily operation of the Consignment Store.
  • Open and close the department as scheduled.
  • Ensure the store is clean, organized, and professionally presented.
  • Work independently and make appropriate day-to-day decisions.
  • Communicate regularly with the Consignment Store Manager and Saddlers Row management.
  • Help ensure Saddlers Row policies and consignment procedures are followed.

Consignment & Inventory

  • Receive and process new consignment merchandise.
  • Assist with evaluating, pricing, tagging, and merchandising items.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and consignor records.
  • Monitor inventory and identify items that need to be repriced, marked down, returned, or promoted.
  • Communicate with consignors regarding their merchandise, sales, and accounts.
  • Help maintain a smooth and organized consignment intake process.

Customer Service & Sales

  • Provide exceptional, knowledgeable customer service.
  • Assist customers with tack, apparel, equipment, and other equestrian merchandise.
  • Build strong relationships with customers and consignors.
  • Work toward Consignment Store sales goals.
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales and improve the customer experience.
  • Handle customer questions and concerns professionally.

Online & Web Sales

  • Sell consignment merchandise through eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and other online sales platforms.
  • Photograph merchandise for online listings.
  • Create accurate and appealing product listings.
  • Research pricing and determine appropriate online pricing.
  • Respond to online customer inquiries.
  • Process online orders and assist with packing and shipping.
  • Maintain accurate online inventory.
  • Identify merchandise that may have greater potential through online sales.

Merchandising

  • Maintain attractive and organized displays throughout the Consignment Store.
  • Ensure merchandise is properly categorized, sized, tagged, and easy to shop.
  • Regularly refresh displays and move merchandise to encourage sales.
  • Help create promotions and displays that drive customer interest.
  • Maintain a polished presentation consistent with the Saddlers Row brand.

Qualifications

  • Previous retail, consignment, tack store, or equestrian industry experience preferred.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of equestrian apparel, tack, saddles, and horse equipment.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative.
  • Strong sales skills and ability to recognize opportunities to increase sales.
  • Familiarity with eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and other online sales platforms.
  • Experience with web-based selling or e-commerce preferred.
  • Comfortable photographing merchandise and creating online product listings.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to learn and use Saddlers Row's inventory and point-of-sale systems.
  • Reliable, professional, and positive attitude.
  • Ability to work weekends as required.

What We Are Looking For

This is a hands-on Co-Manager position in a small, close-knit department. You will not be sitting behind a desk all day. You will be helping customers, processing consignments, organizing inventory, creating online listings, merchandising the store, and making sure the department runs smoothly.

We are looking for someone who can take ownership, stay organized, sell, problem-solve, and work well as part of a two-person team.

The right person will have a genuine interest in horses and the equestrian industry and understand the importance of creating a positive experience for both our customers and consignors.

Compensation

Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.

Employee discounts and additional benefits will be discussed during the interview process.

To Apply

Please submit your resume and a brief introduction outlining your experience in retail, consignment, online sales, or the equestrian industry.
