What is an epub?

An Epub job involves the creation, formatting, and conversion of digital books and documents into the EPUB file format, which is widely used for e-books. Professionals in this field ensure that content is properly structured, visually appealing, and compatible with various e-readers and devices. Tasks may include text formatting, image placement, metadata management, and quality assurance. Epub specialists often work with authors, publishers, and designers to create high-quality digital publications.

What are the typical responsibilities of an epub specialist on a publishing team?

As an EPUB Specialist, your primary responsibilities include converting manuscripts and print files into accessible EPUB formats, troubleshooting layout or compatibility issues across different devices, and ensuring all digital books meet industry standards and accessibility requirements. You often collaborate with editors, designers, and quality assurance teams to deliver high-quality digital publications. Daily tasks may involve using specialized software to format and validate files, as well as providing technical support to authors or colleagues. This hands-on, detail-oriented role is critical for publishers seeking to deliver seamless digital reading experiences to their audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the epub position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EPUB Specialist, you need expertise in digital publishing standards, familiarity with e-books formats (like EPUB and MOBI), and strong proficiency with HTML, CSS, and relevant content management systems. Experience with tools such as Adobe InDesign, Sigil, and Calibre, and a solid understanding of accessibility guidelines, are highly valued in this field. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure error-free, accessible, and visually appealing digital books that meet both publisher and reader expectations.

Job description

Overview
Lifeway is seeking a Typesetting Specialist to lead the layout and typesetting of Bible and reference book projects for our Holman Bible & Reference Publishing imprint. In this role, you will craft high-quality, brand-consistent layouts across print and digital formats - from complex Scripture typography and study notes to ePub and PDF file preparation - ensuring every product reaches readers with accuracy and excellence. You will partner closely with editorial, design, and production teams in a remote-friendly environment, with occasional travel to Middle Tennessee for team gatherings.
Why Lifeway?
Lifeway is a place where you can bring your faith and work experience to join in the most important mission in the world: making disciples of Jesus Christ. Whether you're a creator or storyteller, data guru or problem-solver, or anywhere in between, if you're passionate about serving the church, we have a place for you. Lifeway has a strong Work from Anywhere (WFA) culture that is deeply focused on our mission and values. While headquartered in Nashville, TN, many of our positions are remote-eligible and have autonomy and flexibility with work hours. We provide equipment and resources to ensure team members have access to a productive and ergonomic workspace. We believe building relationships and community is essential to how we work together, so Lifeway hosts all-team meetings several times per year and provides travel for key team gatherings for remote-based team members. Full-time employees are eligible for enrollment in our comprehensive benefits plans including healthcare, vacation and sick time, holiday pay, care days, 401(k) plan, maternity and parental leave, adoption assistance, mission trip time, and more. If this sounds like a place where you would be excited to serve the kingdom of God, we would love for you to join our team.
This is a remote position in the U.S. with occasional travel to Nashville for in-person team gatherings. #LI-Remote
