Job Summary and Qualifications

The Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is an expert in the management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyad. S/he is coach, consultant, teacher, and lactation expert. As a consultant, s/he works collaboratively with Labor and Delivery, Newborn and Neonatal Intensive Care Nurseries, Pediatricians, OBs, Family Practice health care teams to develop feeding plans for a range of infants from the normal newborn to the complex neonate. S/he makes clinical assessments, and uses current lactation theories and research to develop evidence-based feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the physicianโ€™s and familyโ€™s breastfeeding goals. S/he is may also be responsible for teaching prenatal classes in coordination with the Lead Lactation consultant and leadership. 

What qualifications you will need:

Education/Skills

  • Associateโ€™s degree required; BSN preferred.  
  • BSN will be required within 3 years of employment.  
  • Professional Nursing Organization membership encouraged

Experience

  • Minimum of one year experience in lactation preferred.

Licenses, Registrations and/or Certifications

  • Registered Nurse license eligible to practice in the State of Texas required
  • Current BLS issued from HCA approved vendor required
  • IBCLC certification 
  • NRP issued from HCA approved vendor required
