Job description

Epic Caché Database Administrator

CTG is seeking a skilled Epic Caché Database Administrator to join our team. The Epic Caché Database Administrator is responsible for the performance, reliability, and integrity of the InterSystems Caché (or IRIS) database environment that underpins the Epic electronic health record (EHR). This role ensures optimal system performance, supports upgrades and maintenance, and collaborates closely with Epic application teams, infrastructure teams, and operational stakeholders. The administrator plays a critical role in maintaining a stable, secure, and high-performing Epic platform.

Key Responsibilities
  • Database Administration & Performance
  • Manage, monitor, and optimize Epic's Caché/IRIS database environment to ensure high availability and performance.
  • Perform routine database maintenance, including journaling, backups, indexing, and space management.
  • Monitor system health, troubleshoot performance issues, and implement tuning strategies.
  • Maintain and optimize database configurations, globals, routines, and storage structures.
  • System Maintenance & Upgrades
  • Support Epic upgrades, releases, and database-related maintenance activities.
  • Apply Caché/IRIS patches, hotfixes, and version updates in coordination with Epic and infrastructure teams.
  • Participate in environment refreshes, cloning, and system migrations.
  • Ensure proper documentation and validation of all changes.
  • Security & Compliance
  • Maintain database security, including user access, roles, and auditing.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and Epic best practices.
  • Support encryption, certificate management, and secure data handling procedures.
  • Disaster Recovery & Backup Management
  • Manage and validate backup and restore processes for Epic databases.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
  • Ensure data integrity and availability across all environments.
  • Collaboration & Support
  • Work closely with Epic application teams to understand workflow impacts and support data-related needs.
  • Collaborate with server, storage, and network teams to ensure optimal infrastructure performance.
  • Provide tier-3 support for database-related incidents and participate in on-call rotations.
  • Assist with capacity planning, monitoring, and long-term performance strategies.
  • Documentation & Governance
  • Maintain detailed documentation of database configurations, maintenance procedures, and operational standards.
  • Participate in change control, governance processes, and technical reviews.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and best-practice development.
Qualifications

Required Experience administering InterSystems Caché or IRIS databases, ideally in a healthcare or Epic environment. Strong understanding of database performance tuning, journaling, backup strategies, and storage management. Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and command-line administration. Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams. Epic Caché/IRIS certification or Epic DBA training. Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group are required.
