These internships provide hands-on experience and exposure to real-world environmental issues, helping interns develop professional skills and build a network in the field. Most internships are unpaid or modestly paid and may last from a few weeks to several months, depending on the organization.

What types of projects or fieldwork can I expect to participate in during an environmental science internship?

As an Environmental Science intern, you can expect to engage in a variety of projects that may include environmental sampling, data collection, laboratory analysis, and report writing. Interns often assist with fieldwork such as monitoring water or soil quality, conducting biodiversity surveys, and helping with environmental impact assessments. These experiences provide hands-on exposure to real-world environmental issues and often involve close collaboration with scientists, engineers, and policy experts. The work environment is typically a mix of office-based research and outdoor field activities, offering a well-rounded introduction to the field.

  • Effective written/verbal communication and organization/analytical skills; experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports a plus.
  • Experience recording/writing detailed technical data and reports, and building tables and spreadsheets (including tabulation and manipulation of data).
  • Demonstrated attributes to become a strong consultant: team player, eagerness to learn and grow, selfโ€‘starter who takes initiative, versatile, and serviceโ€‘oriented mentality.
  • Highly organized with keen eye for detail, but with the ability to maintain the big picture.
  • Highโ€‘level proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Driverโ€™s license required: valid driverโ€™s license and/or ability to operate a company vehicle due to frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility, travel, and work independently.
  • Ability to pass preโ€‘hire background check and drug test.
  • This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
Preferred
  • Masterโ€™s degree in a related field.
  • Prior consulting experience supporting EHS compliance or environmental projects.
  • Experience supporting multiโ€‘site or complex regulatory environments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical assistance on EHS compliance, sustainability, site investigation and remediation, and due diligence transaction projects.
  • Prepare plans, permits, and reports for hazardous waste, air quality, hazardous material management, oil spill prevention, and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) storm water and wastewater programs.
  • Perform environmental compliance assessments and implement followโ€‘up corrective actions to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Perform Phase I environmental site assessments to support property transfer transactions.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including sampling, ecological field studies, drilling, well installation, remedial pilot tests, construction oversight, and remedial system operation and maintenance.
  • Compile and evaluate data and assist in report preparation.
