What does an environmental health safety engineer do?

An Environmental Health Safety (EHS) Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring programs and policies that ensure a safe and healthy work environment. They identify potential hazards, conduct risk assessments, and ensure compliance with environmental and occupational health regulations. EHS Engineers also investigate accidents, provide safety training, and recommend corrective actions to prevent future incidents. Their work is crucial for protecting employees, the public, and the environment from potential harm.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental health safety engineer?

To thrive as an Environmental Health Safety (EHS) Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering, environmental science, and occupational health, often supported by a relevant bachelor's degree and knowledge of regulatory standards. Familiarity with tools such as OSHA compliance software, incident reporting systems, and certifications like Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is typical. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for identifying risks and promoting a culture of safety.
