What is an environmental graphic designer?

An Environmental Graphic Designer is a professional who integrates graphic design with architecture, interior design, and landscape to create visually engaging spaces. They develop signage, wayfinding systems, murals, and branded environments that help people navigate and experience places like offices, museums, airports, and public spaces. Their work enhances the user's experience by combining aesthetics, functionality, and communication. Environmental Graphic Designers collaborate closely with architects, interior designers, and clients to ensure cohesive and effective visual solutions.

How does an environmental graphic designer typically collaborate with architects and interior designers during a project?

Environmental Graphic Designers frequently work closely with architects and interior designers to ensure that visual elements such as signage, wayfinding systems, and branded environments are seamlessly integrated into the built space. Collaboration often involves attending project meetings, sharing design concepts, and coordinating on materials, colors, and placement to maintain a cohesive aesthetic and support the overall user experience. Clear communication and flexibility are essential, as design solutions may need to adapt to evolving architectural plans or client feedback.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental graphic designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Graphic Designer, you need a strong background in graphic design, spatial design, and visual communication, typically supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and knowledge of wayfinding systems and signage fabrication processes is essential. Job Summary
Artemis is seeking a full-time Graphic Designer to serve as a primary visual storyteller for the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), the nation's premier military medical center. This role is responsible for translating complex medical, military, and command information into compelling, high-impact visual communications, managing the entire lifecycle of design projects from conceptualization to final production, and ensuring all visual materials advance the mission and maintain the prestigious brand of Walter Reed.
The Graphic Designer role requires a self-starter, proactive problem solver and action-oriented team player with previous experience in graphic design, visual communications, or creative production within a federal, military, or healthcare environment. This position needs an individual that is committed to providing superior service, poised under pressure and has a positive and flexible attitude.
This is a contingent hire position.
Offers will be contingent upon client approval, ability to meet security requirements, and the ability to adhere to any on-site requirements (which may change at contract award).
Onsite work in Bethesda, Maryland, is required.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and production of a wide range of visual materials - command-level publications, public health campaigns, patient education materials, environmental graphics, digital signage, and social media content - ensuring strict adherence to brand standards.
  • Serve as project lead for all graphic design requests: develop project timelines, manage a production calendar, and coordinate with stakeholders across the medical center to define requirements and manage feedback.
  • Translate complex medical and scientific concepts into clear, accessible, and engaging infographics and visual aids that resonate with diverse audiences, from patients and families to senior military leadership.
  • Create and edit photographic and video assets, integrating them into comprehensive visual communication products that enhance storytelling and engagement across all platforms.
  • Collaborate with the public affairs and communications team to brainstorm creative concepts and develop cohesive visual strategies for major hospital events, initiatives, and crisis communications scenarios.
  • Manage the approval workflow for all visual materials, presenting concepts and final products to senior graphic designers and leadership for review and final sign-off.
  • Apply HIPAA and Protected Health Information (PHI) safeguarding principles rigorously across all visual products.
  • Manage a high volume of concurrent projects, set priorities, and meet firm deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Communications, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in graphic design, supported by a compelling portfolio that showcases expertise in branding, layout for print and digital, and data visualization (infographics).
  • Portfolio of samples will be required.
  • Demonstrated mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and familiarity with pre-press and digital file preparation.
  • Proven experience in healthcare communications, Military public affairs, or a similar regulated, high-visibility environment.
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to rigorously apply the principles of safeguarding HIPAA and PHI in all visual products.
  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to manage a high volume of concurrent projects, set priorities, and meet firm deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with video editing and motion graphics software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro/After Effects) is a significant advantage.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance (Tier II, non-critical sensitive position).
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.

Desired Qualifications
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical and time management skills.
  • Proven ability to organize, prioritize and work well with others.
  • Ability to communicate thoughts, ideas and solutions logically both written and orally.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to receive feedback from clients and implement changes quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to get up to speed quickly on complex issues.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment.
