Job description

Environmental Service Technician (EVS)

VA Portland Health Care System

Vancouver, WA / Portland, OR

Conducting searches for a dependable and detail-oriented Environmental Service Technicians (EVS) to support the VA Portland Health Care System. This role is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and presentable healthcare environment for Veterans, staff, and visitors across designated VA facilities. This position supports non-direct patient care areas and vacant clinic exam rooms in accordance with VA infection prevention standards, safety protocols, and environmental services procedures.

Shift Availability: Multiple shifts available including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays

Key Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfected restrooms, offices, hallways, elevators, stairwells, common areas, and designated clinic spaces
  • Perform terminal cleaning of vacant exam rooms using hospital-grade disinfectants
  • Empty, sanitize, and reline trash receptacles
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, buff, and maintain floors
  • Restock restroom consumables and janitorial supplies
  • Follow infection prevention and sanitation procedures
  • Utilize microfiber cleaning systems and approved VA cleaning products
  • Properly display wet floor signs and maintain safe work areas
  • Report hazards, maintenance concerns, or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Maintain janitorial closets, equipment, and supplies in accordance with VA standards
  • Respond to urgent cleaning requests within required response times
  • Maintain professionalism while working in an active healthcare environment

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of custodial, housekeeping, environmental services, or janitorial experience preferred
  • Healthcare or hospital cleaning experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to follow detailed cleaning procedures and infection control standards
  • Strong attention to detail and reliability
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform physical duties throughout shift
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent attendance and punctuality required

Security & Compliance Requirements

Selected candidates must successfully complete:

  • VA onboarding requirements
  • Federal background investigation (Tier 1 / NACI)
  • Fingerprinting
  • Privacy and security awareness training
  • Bloodborne pathogen training

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching
  • Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and cleaning tools
