Job description

POSITION PURPOSE:
The City of Birmingham, MI (EOE) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Streets/Sewer/Water (SSW) Operator in the Department of Public Services. Under the supervision of the SSW Foreman, this entry-level position performs maintenance and operation of public infrastructure.
Work includes outdoor physical labor and operation of various types of equipment; including dump trucks, snow plows, and light construction equipment. Candidates must be able to operate equipment with knowledge of safety procedures, and exercise good judgement. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties related to a work project; assists other crew personnel as required and assigned. Successful candidate expected to be available for incidental overtime related to the mitigation of snow and ice hazards on roads and other infrastructure related emergencies.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This list is not to be treated as all inclusive.
  1. Operates a variety of loading equipment to load snow, leaves, and other materials for removal. Operates front-end loaders to load materials for transport to and from work sites.
  2. Drives trucks to haul and spread sand, stone, asphalt, and other materials. Drives roller to machine roll asphalt repairs.
  3. Transports and locates barriers, warning devices, and miscellaneous equipment on work sites.
  4. Assist with the operation of pressurized sewer and catch-basin cleaning equipment in the sewer maintenance program. Operates non-pressurized sewer cleaning equipment.
  5. Plows snow from streets and parking lots utilizing trucks with front mounted and/or underbody plow and salt spreader.
  6. Reads, repairs, and participates in cyclical maintenance of water meters.
  7. Assists with sign and parking meter operations and repairs.
  8. Assists with installation, repair, and maintenance of the City's water and sewer system including water service, drinking fountains, fire hydrants, water mains, stop boxes, and service valves.
  9. Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

NECESSARY SKILLS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Possess high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License, Group A or B, with tanker endorsement within one year.
  • 2-3 years of experience in the operation of light and medium-duty construction equipment preferred.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, State of Michigan Drinking Water Operator Certification, S-4 or higher, preferred.
