What Does an Entry Level Security Analyst Do?

Entry-level security analysts examine information to help identify risks and threats, then recommend and help implement strategies to stop those threats from damaging their employer’s network or property. In this role, you typically work under a senior analyst to develop your skills and learn more about the tools and techniques used to be more effective in your job. Many security analysts specialize in the industry. For example, cybersecurity analysts often focus on problems such as hacking and viruses, while physical security analysts may look for blind spots in camera coverage and patrols at private facilities. Entry-level security analysts usually work regular hours, but employers may occasionally ask you to work nights or weekends, based on their security needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Security Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Security Analyst, you need a foundational understanding of cybersecurity principles, networking, and operating systems, usually backed by a relevant degree or certifications like CompTIA Security+. Familiarity with tools such as SIEM platforms, vulnerability scanners, and intrusion detection systems is commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help distinguish high performers in this role. These skills are crucial for identifying threats, mitigating risks, and supporting an organization's overall security posture.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level security analysts when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level security analysts often encounter challenges such as learning to quickly identify real threats among large volumes of security alerts, adapting to rapidly changing technologies, and understanding complex organizational security policies. To overcome these challenges, new analysts should focus on continuous learning, actively seek mentorship from experienced team members, and make use of available training resources. Regular collaboration with IT and security teams also helps build practical skills and confidence in handling incidents effectively.

About the Role

We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented SOC (Security Operations Center) Analyst to join our IT Security team. This is an entry-level opportunity ideal for someone early in their cybersecurity career who is eager to gain hands-on experience monitoring and defending enterprise systems.

In this role, you’ll support day-to-day security operations by identifying, investigating, and helping resolve potential security incidents. You’ll work closely with internal analysts and external SOC partners to help protect the organization’s systems, data, and users. Your work will directly contribute to strengthening the organization’s overall security posture.

What You’ll Do

  • Monitor and support daily operations of security tools and technologies, ensuring effective and efficient performance.
  • Investigate alerts and suspicious activity, escalating potential security incidents as appropriate.
  • Review system logs, reports, and security events across endpoints, networks, and identity platforms to identify risks and recommend remediation.
  • Assist in threat hunting activities and collaborate with internal teams and external SOC partners to respond to potential threats.
  • Participate in vulnerability management efforts, including vulnerability assessments, audits, and remediation tracking.
  • Maintain and support security documentation, including policies, standards, baselines, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Contribute to maintaining secure configuration baselines for systems, applications, and infrastructure.
  • Support evaluations of security tools, technologies, and enterprise security architecture initiatives.
  • Stay current on cybersecurity trends, emerging threats, and evolving attack methods.
  • Assist with employee security awareness training and initiatives to promote a security-first culture.
  • Participate in security audits, penetration testing activities, and risk analysis efforts.

Your Wellness Is Our Focus

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents
  • Employee Assistance Programs with a strong focus on mental health
  • 24/7 access to a licensed therapist
  • Wellness programs with employee perks
  • Onsite Fitness Center and Medical Clinic

Financial Wellbeing

  • Generous 401(k) matching retirement plan
  • Pre-tax savings options including HSA and FSA
  • Tuition assistance
  • Financial wellness resources through our Employee Assistance Program
  • Earning potential up to $64,000

Flexibility & Time Off

  • Paid time off including vacation, sick leave, parental leave, holidays, and disability leave

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or a combination of education and experience.
  • 0–2 years of experience in cybersecurity, IT, or a related discipline.

Technical Skills

  • Foundational knowledge of IT infrastructure, including networks, systems, cloud technologies, and applications.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts such as threat hunting, incident response, security analysis, and/or digital forensics.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST 800 series, CIS, CMMC).
  • Exposure to enterprise security tools and concepts, such as:
  • Security Information and Event Management (SIEM)
  • Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)
  • Network security monitoring
  • Firewalls and intrusion detection/prevention systems
  • Identity and access management
  • Vulnerability management tools
  • Awareness of security best practices and general enterprise cybersecurity principles.

Our Promise to You

At Atlas, we want you to grow your career - not just fill a role. We invest in our people through:

  • Free online training via a modern learning and development platform
  • A company-wide mentorship program
