Part-Time Food Service POS Clerk

Position: Food Service POS Clerk
Employment Status: Part-Time
Hours: Approximately 4 hours per school day
Work Schedule: School days; schedule determined by the Food Service Department
Reports To: Food Service Director / Food Service Authority
Location: Menahga Public Schools, Menahga, Minnesota




Position Summary

The Food Service POS Clerk is responsible for accurately and efficiently operating the school food service point-of-sale (POS) system and supporting the daily meal service operation. This position provides friendly, professional service to students and staff while maintaining accurate meal account information and following all district, state, and federal school nutrition requirements.

Essential Job Duties

  • Operate the school food service POS system accurately and efficiently.
  • Process student and staff meal purchases and maintain accurate meal account transactions.
  • Verify student meal eligibility and meal status as directed by the Food Service Department.
  • Accurately enter or verify meal transactions in the POS system.
  • Assist students with meal account questions in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student meal account and eligibility information.
  • Follow all USDA, Minnesota Department of Education, and district food service procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining an orderly, efficient, and welcoming serving-line environment.
  • Monitor meals selected to ensure transactions are recorded correctly.
  • Assist with counting and reconciling meals served and POS transactions as assigned.
  • Communicate meal account concerns or discrepancies to the appropriate food service staff.
  • Assist with basic food service duties when needed, including serving, stocking, cleaning, and maintaining work areas.
  • Follow proper food safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene practices.
  • Maintain a clean and organized POS area and surrounding work space.
  • Assist with opening and/or closing food service areas as assigned.
  • Work cooperatively with food service staff, students, teachers, and other district employees.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Food Service Director or designee.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to accurately operate a computer and POS system.
  • Basic math and money-handling skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with students and staff.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude in a busy school environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with a school food service POS system.
  • Previous experience in food service, cashiering, customer service, or a school setting.
  • Familiarity with school meal programs and student meal account procedures.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods during meal service.
  • Frequently bend, reach, lift, and carry supplies as needed.
  • Perform repetitive computer/POS and cash-handling tasks.
  • Lift and move items weighing up to approximately 25 pounds as needed.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced cafeteria environment.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in a school cafeteria and food service environment. The position may involve exposure to heat, cold, food products, cleaning products, noise, and frequent interaction with students and staff.

Confidentiality

The employee shall maintain strict confidentiality regarding student information, meal eligibility, account balances, and other confidential school district information. All student records and information shall be handled in accordance with applicable district policies and state and federal requirements.
