PER DIEM SHEET METAL WORKER

The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the aforementioned position.
DEFINITION: Under direction, performs all general sheet metal work involved in the layout, construction, maintenance, and erection of sheet metal structures and equipment; works with various machine and hand tools common to the sheet metal trade; may prepare or work from sketches, blueprints, and specifications in accordance with accepted trade practices; takes the lead over and gives suitable assignments to those assigned as helpers; does related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
2. Three years of experience in work involving the construction, repair and maintenance of sheet metal fixtures, fittings and appliances.
3. Applicants will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.. Fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal products and equipment, such as control boxes, drainpipes, ventilators, and furnace casings, according to job order or blueprints
2. Select gauge and type of sheet metal according to product being fabricated and knowledge of metal.
3. Locates and marks dimensions and reference lines on metal sheet.
4. Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as shears, brakes, bending rolls, and punch and drill presses to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal.
5. Shapes metal over anvils, blocks, or forms, using hammer.
6. Sets up and operates soldering and welding equipment to join together sheet metal parts.
7. Smooths seams, joints, or burred surfaces, using files and portable grinder or buffer.
8. Installs assemblies in plant or worksite according to blueprint specifications, using hand tools and portable power tools.
9. Inspects assembles and installation for conformance with specifications, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, scales, and micrometer.
10. Installs, repairs, and/or makes ducts, gutters, downspouts, copper leaders, ventilators, roofing, flashing, chain guards, clamps, hoods, drains, containers, and other sheet metal products.
11. Using the parallel line, radial line or triangulation methods, develops patterns for various sheet metal objects.
12. Joins pieces using various methods of fastening such as welded, "C" sunk, lap riveted, standing riveted, grooved double, and various types of circular seams.
13. Constructs double hem, square and standing hem edges, beads and notches sheet metal, and welds, brazes, and solders joints.
14. Uses electric and hand shears, folding brakes, hardies, files, center punches, pneumatic hammers, swages, dollies, stakes, folders, edgers and trammels.
15. Erects and works from ladders and scaffolding.
16. Prepares and/or works from sketches, blueprints, and specifications in accordance with accepted trade practices.
17. Makes time and materials estimates.
18. Inspects work in progress and completed work.
19. Gives suitable assignments to helpers, and keeps needed records. Does whatever soldering, riveting, straightening, and other repair work to repair leaky and malfunctioning pots, steamers, cans, pails, coffee, tea and hot water runs, aluminum dishes, galvanized sinks, tray and guard rails, bread and food trucks, and other kitchen and dairy equipment.
20.Constructs, repairs, and maintains ventilators and air ducts.
21. Makes inspections, constructs tin roofs and does the work involved in the placing, soldering, and shaping of the tin.
22. Repairs slate roofs, and does the needed flashing, papering, cutting, and punching prior to the installation of the slate.
23. As may be required in an institution under the jurisdiction of the State Department of Human Services, instructs inmates and/or patients in sheet metal work and takes the measures necessary to insure their safety, custody, welfare, and work progress.
24. Nails strip shingles, rubberoid, and other weatherproofing materials on slate roofs.
25. Solders all types of gasoline tanks, constructs new sheet metal gasoline tanks, solders all types of vehicle cooling radiators, and constructs steel cabs for equipment.
26. Constructs all types of metal tool boxes and metal drip pans. Constructs all sizes and types of stove pipe and smoke stacks.
27. When so required, assists other craftsmen in their work.
28. Keeps simple records.
29. In the Department of Human Services may be required to undergo fire training classes.
30. May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
31. Perform other duties and tasks assigned by supervisor.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
1. Wide knowledge of the problems involved in inspecting, repairing, constructing, and maintaining copper leaders and gutters, tin roofs and gutters and slate and other roofs, including the operations of flashing, papering, cutting, and punching prior to the installation of slate and other types of roofing work.
2. Wide knowledge of the materials, methods, and equipment used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of ventilators and air ducts.
3. Ability to analyze problems involving sheet metal work, organize assigned construction and repair work and develop effective work methods.
4. Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions and assignments.
5. Ability to inspect, repair, construct, and maintain copper leaders and gutters, tin leaders and gutters, and repair slate roofs.
6. Ability to inspect and repair kitchen, dairy, and other equipment.
7. Ability to construct, maintain, and repair ventilators and air ducts, and install strip shingles and other weatherproofing materials on the roofs of buildings.
8. Ability to requisition, store, safeguard and properly use needed equipment, materials and supplies.
9. Ability to keep simple records of equipment, materials, supplies, work done and time spent.
10.Ability, to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
11. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
