Job description

Symbrium, Inc. is looking for a recent Mechanical Engineering graduate or early-career engineer who wants to learn how sophisticated custom machinery is actually designed, built, assembled, debugged, and put into operation.


This is not a desk-only engineering position.


You will work directly with experienced engineers, designers, machinists, technicians, vendors, and machine builders. One day you may be reviewing a machine assembly in SolidWorks, the next you may be on the shop floor helping assemble components, solving a fit-up problem, checking purchased parts, working with a supplier, or helping bring a new machine through final build and checkout.


We are looking for someone who wants to become a well-rounded machine engineer—someone who understands both the engineering drawings and the physical machine.

For the right person, this position offers the opportunity to learn how complex, one-of-a-kind industrial machines go from an engineering concept to a functioning piece of equipment.


What You Will Do

  • Help manage custom machine builds from engineering through assembly and completion
  • Work alongside engineers and designers during machine development
  • Spend significant time in the shop supporting machine assembly, integration, and troubleshooting
  • Assist with mechanical design and modifications in SolidWorks
  • Create or modify parts, brackets, fixtures, machine components, and assemblies
  • Review drawings, bills of material, purchased components, and assembly requirements
  • Coordinate with machinists, fabricators, technicians, vendors, and suppliers
  • Help resolve fit, tolerance, interference, assembly, and manufacturing issues
  • Track parts and components required to keep machine builds moving
  • Assist with machine checkout, testing, debugging, and documentation
  • Make field-driven engineering changes when something does not work exactly as expected
  • Learn machine components including bearings, shafts, motors, gearboxes, servos, linear guides, actuators, sensors, pneumatics, hydraulics, tooling, and structural assemblies
  • Gain practical experience with how sophisticated machinery is actually manufactured and assembled


What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
  • Recent graduate or approximately 0–3 years of experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Genuine interest in machinery, manufacturing, and hands-on engineering
  • Willingness to work both at a computer and on the shop floor
  • Basic CAD experience; SolidWorks experience is preferred
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and understand basic dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Comfortable working with tools, mechanical components, and physical equipment
  • Strong problem-solving ability
  • Organized and capable of following multiple parts of a machine build at the same time
  • Able to communicate effectively with engineers, machinists, technicians, and suppliers
  • Willing to ask questions, learn quickly, and take increasing responsibility as experience develops

You studied Mechanical Engineering because you actually like machines.

You do not expect to spend your entire career sitting behind a computer.

This position can develop into a much broader machine-design and project-engineering role as your experience grows.


IMPORTANT APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS


LOCAL CANDIDATES ONLY — RALEIGH, NC AREA

This is a full-time, on-site position in the Raleigh, North Carolina area. Applicants must currently reside within approximately 25 miles of Raleigh and be able to work at our facility on a regular daily basis.


We are not considering remote candidates or candidates requiring relocation for this position.


ITAR / EXPORT CONTROL REQUIREMENT

This position involves access to technical information, equipment, and/or technology subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).


Candidates must be legally eligible to access ITAR-controlled technical data and technology as required for the position. This position is intended for individuals who qualify as a U.S. person under ITAR, 22 CFR § 120.62, or who otherwise possess the required U.S. Government authorization for such access.
